WINGNUT Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Hi all! Some of you may recall or may have contributed to the wide track suspension conversion i did just prior to christmas. One of the main reasons was to potentially gain a better steering lock, however after speaking to Westfields technical dept i was informed i would have to purchase a new rack as mine is fitted with westfield lock stops and arent removable???? This doesnt sound right to me i would have thought if they were fitted after manufacture then they should be removable no? has anyone had similar issues or know if they are removable? cheers Quote
WINGNUT Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 apologies for posting this in wrong section what a muppet Quote
Mark (smokey mow) Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 The Westfield rack is made with built in lockstops which aren't removeable Quote
WINGNUT Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 Least i know for definate thanks for your reply Quote
stephenh Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 If you have the Westfield alloy uprights then you can improve the turning circle considerably as well as effectively speed up the rack by fitting the short competition steering arms which Westfield can supply. They're cheaper than buying a new rack. Quote
johngill Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 I have a 2000 sport Seiw kit bought 2007. I pulled back the steering boot and found nylon stops which I cut off, that was in 2008 been fine since much improved turning circle no fouling of body work; it has wide track.. Don't know if the steering rack Westfield supply changed after 2007. Quote
WINGNUT Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 Hi johngill mine is 2004 vehicle so assume possibly same rack as yours? how obvious are the stops is it a case of pull boot back and turn on the approprite lock in order too access? Is your wide track westfields? Quote

stephenh Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Don't think what I said is relevant to the Cortina uprights, as the Cortina ones have an integral steering arm, part of the upright casting so not changeable I'm afraid. Quote

s2rrr Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 If you pull back the end gaiter you will see whether you have the white nylon stops or not. I cut mine off and no issues at all. 2009 supplied kit I think. Bob Quote
WINGNUT Posted February 18, 2013 Author Posted February 18, 2013 Thanks all for your input and advice! Will be checking behind gaiters tomorrow night only just sat down since work!! Does the steering need to be turned on a lock to access the stops if fitted? im assuming it will! Quote
