Bananaman Posted November 30, 2002 Author Posted November 30, 2002 Ok so lets assume that the tuneability will be similar to the VX, which seems likley as both engines are squareish (massive assumption i know but 185bhp just by fitting throttle bodies is roughley the same for both, is it not (maybe the duratec will be 5bhp better ?)). Are we forgetting the Duratec is some what lighter than the VX, 20kg+?? Raceline were saying that all the ancillaries they are developing are aimed at lightness along with their other rolls. I belive they are trying to get close to the K-series in terms of weight. This has to be a massive plus in a Seven type car, has it not? Andy Another cat to put amonge the Pigeons . Quote
Nick M Posted December 1, 2002 Posted December 1, 2002 Raceline were saying that all the ancillaries they are developing are aimed at lightness So expect them to be expensive then ! I belive they are trying to get close to the K-series in terms of weight. Whoopy-do !! Frankly by the time you've added enough strengthening bits to get the K series reliable for serious power outputs, it's not the featherweight engine some people would have you believe. And let's face it, reliability has to be considered when you're taking any engine somewhere beyond what the engineers originally intended. And that, IMO (and based on what I've gleaned from a few engine builders) is where the venerable VX (and the newer 1.6 derivatives) scores. It seems it was designed with power in mind from the beginning. Why else get Cosworth to make the first heads and finish them by hand ? And the 1.6 engine shares a similar approach in that the original prototypes were running an easy 150bhp on the dyno before emissions and economy considerations came into play. In fact we can blame Lotus for the rather weedy 110bhp it produces in stock form. So yes, do get excited about the Duratec. But, as I've alluded to in the past, don't get caught up in what is, IMHO, hype. Until we've seen a few installs producing the claimed power outputs (facts, not hearsay) for sensible amounts of money then I don't think it should be lauded as the answer to everyones' engine based prayers. That point in time is, as Blatman said above, still a good couple of years away. Quote
juansolo Posted December 1, 2002 Posted December 1, 2002 Some people will allways hang on to yesteryear's technolgy Weirdly I'm the opposite of this despite eveidence to the contrary. Quote
Mike H Posted December 1, 2002 Posted December 1, 2002 Give me a Rover V8 anyday! Your £7k for a Duratec would give me 4.6L 300+bhp 300+ft/lb torque fully balanced monster. It might be old but it's all aluminium! Mike Quote
SteveD Posted December 1, 2002 Posted December 1, 2002 raceline seem to be saying a lot but until the engines are out and about and have been proven to put out the BHP figures that people are quoting ,and are proven to be reliable and lets not forget cost efective ,because this is after all club motorsport the jury is still out in the davies household anyway its still a crapy ford engine after all Quote
Bananaman Posted December 1, 2002 Author Posted December 1, 2002 anyway its still a crapy ford engine after all good to see that prejudice is not clouding your judgemet Steve. Andy I recon this year we will see if the Duratec will become the engine of choice for club motorsport. Should be interesting!! Im sure the VX will carry on for a little while yet, but at least it may have some serious competition, which has got to be a good thing. Quote
SteveD Posted December 1, 2002 Posted December 1, 2002 bl**** vx better carry on for a while yet ive got chuffin stacks of em cant see people using the duratec in any numbers for a couple of years they will be just to expensive ,and knowing raceline the bits you will need to get serious power will cost the earth ,companies producing performance parts for the duratec will be few and far between and who the #### would want a ford engine anyway Quote
stu999 Posted December 1, 2002 Posted December 1, 2002 The Duratec sounds like a fair engine from the initial feedback, but I dont think that it will be a couple of years at least before they make an impact, if at all. The VX power figures are still impressive (standard and modified) for an engine thats nigh on fifteen years old, with plenty of goodies available new and secondhand. The claimed power figures thus far are only the same as the VX, but for a good deal more beer tokens. But until people start using Duratecs, we will never find out how good/bad they are. Good luck to those that choose this route (you might need it ) Quote

hogman Posted December 2, 2002 Posted December 2, 2002 Cant understand all this bleeting about Vx and Ford motors - when they can rev to 12000rpm and stay in 1 piece then I will consider them a decent engine!! Hehehe, oh oh the mortars are going off already, oh oh now the artillery, I better start running nowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww Quote
Westfieldman Posted December 2, 2002 Posted December 2, 2002 Run fast cos you car still needs an exhaust so reves to sod all Paul. Quote
hogman Posted December 2, 2002 Posted December 2, 2002 Ah Mr Westfieldman, but alas you are mistaken, the SER1 beast now breathes, albeit with a homemade exhaust without silencer - so it roars to 12000rpm now!!!! Will sound oh soooooooo much sweeter once Mr Laws has finished with it!! Incoming........... Quote
