Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I'll be going there (Argentina) in 4 weeks, is there anything I can drop off for you guys while I'm there? After spending some time in Northern Ireland in the early 70s I'm used to dealing with unruly locals Quote
M444TTB Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Now go away and make more of your fine wine And steaks. Don't forget the steaks! Quote
tolf Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Paul, can you drop off some signs that say Sod Off to the Argies when you visit? Quote
User0083 Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Mine fields were never properly plotted and the land has shifted a good few feet in places! You find the odd sheep in bits just outside the fences, where mines shift just outside. But if you had the lovely youth we have here at the moment, over there, you can see what would happen. I feel that criminals souls be used. If you get to the finish line... You're free. Catch would be they are handcuffed together in extended line. Quote
windy Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I believe the airframe of the last Vulcan is about to expire this year, needing substantial crack detection and mods. Maybe we should fire up our second Lancaster once it gets airborne.. Bob Yes I know. My thinking was get the RAF to pay for it and do it - job done so it can continue to fly for many more years to come Quote
Norman Verona Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I had a chap working with us who was ex-RAF. He was a radio operator and was on duty when the signal came in from the Falklands that the Argentinians had invaded. He called his superior and asked what he should do. Well, lad, you've got that red telephone, use it. So at 2 am in the morning he telephoned Mrs Thatcher to tell her the news. Quote

She'd have still been up anyway - she didn't go to bed until the wee small hours apparently. Quote
Norman Verona Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I think he said she was as she answered her red phone immediately. However, I understand that a journalist who was a ham radio enthusiast got the news first from a fellow radio ham on the Falklands. Quote
jeff oakley Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I have a guy who works for me who was in the Navy. He was on Sir Galahad (SP) when it was hit, war is bad very bad, nothing like the sanatized film version. The tensions were there as now, and instead of sending something meaningful to show we would not be messed with, they sent a fishery vessel. Once it kicked off the response was great, but we came so close to loosing, the turning point was the Arentinian airforce not coming out to play once the harriers were there in force and the Belgrano. We should be brutally frank with Argentina and send some big warnings as said, a couple of submarine test fireing missiles. I doubt they will attack again as we have much better protection there than before. And yes it is about two things, the right of the people to decide their future and the mineral reserves that are there. Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I went to school with a girl that lived there through the hostilities; she was always most embarrassed when her name appeared in books about the islands/conflict. There's another contractor that we often work alongside at several of our "regulars", and I've known for over ten years, who is ex SBS. And spent some time on the ground there during the conflict. We've managed to wheedle bits and pieces out of him over the years. Not a good time. Quote
s2rrr Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Its all very good sabre rattling as long as you have the biggest sabre, last time we were caught out and got by, due to the bravery and absolute resolution of our people. No point fannying about waiting just in case. Cameron is just on the Andrew Marr show now it will be interesting what he has to say. Obviously he won't be saying much but should have acted days ago. Bob Quote
Norman Verona Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 The first conflict was mainly due to us withdrawing navy ships. Even though the PM was warned there was a possibility of an invasion she ignored it. From what I've read, which isn't much, the Argentinians would not have invaded had we had a Frigate on station. We sent the wrong signals. Whilst I don't think Argentina will invade again, we should send a navy ship just to make the point. We don't need another several hundred of our boys killed. ed to add that we also don't need several hundred of their boys killed either. Quote
s2rrr Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Agreed Norman, all for the sake of politics. Cameron says we have the 5th biggest defence budget in the world, then quickly went on to another subject. Either he has acted or is a numpty only the next few weeks will reveal which. Can't say I was impressed but maybe less is more. Bob Quote
Norman Verona Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Whilst people are in poverty and business closing how can we justify such a large defence budget. Who are we defending against. If we remove all the wars we follow the USA into we could make massive cuts to our "defence" budget and deal with our deficit. We ceased to be a world power over 65 years ago. Why do we still act like we have an empire and are a super power? Quote
