Damon Hill Speaks Out Against 80Mph Speed Limit

A caravan on the back of a Discovery 3 passed me at about 85mph this morning on the A30, it was snaking like a poledancers hips. I was doing 60mph on cruise. It's a state of mind... Modern cars ensure people are so cosseted from the outside world that they are oblivious to the dangers others and most of them don't care as you can't reason with them when they're in the driving seat. It's like people pushing in at queues, you wouldn't do it in a shop, so why would you do it on the road? ???

according to some they should have another test.

But why do call it common when it's so rare?

You can propose rules - regulations & educations but none will work.

At this minute, courts all over the world are processing millions of moving violations - court is not a deterent either.

50 - 60- 80 - 90mph does not mean anything.

Common sense is the only solution driving safely.

Presently, when you pass your test you can drive on a motorway on your own having never been on one before. There's a voluntary scheme called 'pass plus' which is designed to extend new drivers experience in various situations including motorways. In my experience as an ADI it's very hard to get pupils to take it up - ultimately it's an extra expense for them.

Also not practical if you live in the fare west of Cornwall as it's 120miles to the nearest motorway. You would need a good five to six hour lesson to get to the M5 and back. Thats without driving on the b****y thing.

S2K7, I think you need a bit more than common sense. Not saying that common sense isn't needed but it's only part of a very big picture.

Have you ever done a defensive driving course by an ex-police driving instructor? The course isn't concerned with a speed limit put up by the local authority, it's all about driving as fast as is safe in the prevailing conditions. It will teach you where to position your car for the best view forward. It will teach you how to approach junctions and roundabouts, it will teach you what to look for as you approach a junction when you have right of way. It does not teach you something that cannot be taught - common sense,

there was just a brilliant comment on Sky Sports F1 coverage of the 2nd Practise...they come to a bit of chat between Damon, Johnny Herbert and the main presenter Simon lazenby...all day they had been talking about the difficulty people getting into silverstone with the weather and bogged-down carparks, so Simon turns to Damon and says "so Damon, did it take you a while to get in today, what with the weather....and the speed you drive at?"

queue Johnny p******** himself and Damon looking a trifle displeased :d

Damon then tried to explain his comments and did an absolutely appauling job of making a point....showed that he basically doesn't have one

Think of the money it generates too - no government in their right mind would want to actually *stop* folk speeding...
