Lurksalot Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 kind of , BUT , i see the mud slinging being done by those that are saying they are falling out of love with the place, fair enough , this happens , move on , but do you really have to sling the mud is it really trying to provide positive input , or just stir it for the sake of it Why open the topic for discussion if you have already decided that you don't think you will like where the discussion will go Baffles me Quote

Nick PC Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Has the boardroom changed, yes like most places it continues to evolve. On the odd occasion things get slightly out of hand but the most important thing is it is still very informative and most of us share a warped sense of humour. Quote

nikpro Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 I think it's very easy to look back with 'rose tinted specs' at the past and think the present is very different to what it used to be like. I joined the club in 2005 and one of my first post was met with a reply of 'Just do a search' - which was quite right really I like the Westfield Forum because there are a large number of long term members who are very technically minded and it's nice to 'bounce ideas' of them. There is probably more knowledge on here than any other forum I visit in relation to cars - some of them are very frustrating; unless you want to slap a turbo on to the side of the engine you are a technical 'nerd' who just gets shouted down by 95% of the Forum. I make no secret that i also like debates and ,yes they can get heated at times when you get frustrated but we are all adults and nobody gets hurt! If you turn your back on such a good forum (which the WSCC is) because you can't stand a bit of 'leg pulling' or a little bit of a dig then I sometimes wonder how you cope in the real world - surely everyone isn't nice to you all of the time? (Or has my sense of reality been warped by dealing with confrontation every minute of my working day?) Anyway........the biggest change this year is the number of new members........more than I can ever remember Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Just curious, and not leading anywhere in particular, it's just the thread got me thinking; is there still such a thing anymore as the workplace initiations we used to have in UK industry, construction etc? Or have tribunals, H&S and the modern world in general killed them off? When not doing officey type stuff, or buried in a comms room, I tend to be on building sites which do sort of skew your sense of humour after a bit, I can always tell if I've been working solidly on-site for any length of time because of it. Heard a classic politically incorrect throw away comment the other week between two of the stone masons, older guy to younger, "come on lad, hit it like you're married to it". Quote
James Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 To answer the question "why do I come here?" after my "self induced exile" caused by various comments by various members. I have deliberately not posted but have popped in to see if I have misjudged some members. There has been considerable change in the tone of conversations which becomes very obvious over time (particularly looking in from the outside). Some people just do not treat others with respect and I feel vindicated in my initial actions. I have to ask the question - would people on this forum treat people in the same way if they were talking face to face? Quote
nikpro Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 would people on this forum treat people in the same way if they were talking face to face? Yes...........but you would probably see I was joking half the time and the comment has been taken the wrong way. Sometimes we forget that the person on the other end of the keyboard does not know the other and their sense of humour/style. I wish I possesed 'lippydaves' keyboard skills where he can post something extremely offensive but you just know straight away it's said 'tongue-in-cheek' and nobody ever does take offence. Quote
jeff oakley Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 I think in truth the board room reflects many things in life, there are people who sometimes take comments as critisisum, the wrong way it is intended and things get blown out of proportion. One thing that sometimes grates is the speed series guys having in jokes that only they get, no problem from me, but I can see how it might look. Steve D can come across as a thug but he has helped more members on here than others and deserves his place in folklore, however he was banned for going too far before, and there are others like him. I can fall out with myself and it doesn't matter to me if it is face to face with others, I have my opinion and everyone has the right to theirs. If we only had people on here who agreed all the time it would be a boring place. Looking at the subject from the commitees view, now we have too many people on here and at large who can be offended by anything and everything, if they get someone complain they have to balance freedom and also the legal position the club has to protect. Not many on here would have any qualms about using the term "theiving pikeys" but substitute thieving travellersfor nigger and you can imagine the phones would light up. As a commitee they would have to deal with both in the same light. My biggest worry is with new members who come on here, sometimes it is easy for people to forget that they only see a snap shot and if they log in to world war three it doesn't look good. I for one think it is better now every post for advice is not answered with"do a search" has the boardroom got worse, not really, has it change yes. Do I still enjoy it yes and many more do. Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Yes, far, far worse face to face. But then like Fraser said, you'd see what I meant. (that's why I do try with the smilie thingies, but there's a limit to what you can do). Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Mind you, the only reason the do a search thing has dropped out of fashion is the poorly working search engine. I think that one was a conspiracy Quote
