Blatman Posted October 20, 2003 Posted October 20, 2003 Uh Ohh, have I just wasted some money of the GL4 Semi Synth from Halfrauds No, you haven't........ GL5 is fine for diffs. GL5 is NOT fine for type 9 gearboxes. GL4 is fine for type 9 gearboxes. I do not know what an MT75 uses, but I'll find out later. The spec is all important. Wether it's semi synth, full synth, or mineral, it's the spec you need to be paying attention to..... Quote
StuartMackay Posted October 20, 2003 Posted October 20, 2003 Anyone experience problems downshifting into second with a type 9....experience, anecdotes and recommendations welcomed Thanks Stuart Quote
stu999 Posted October 20, 2003 Posted October 20, 2003 Yep, if I am 'pushing on' and dont heel-and toe.... Quote
stew72 Posted October 20, 2003 Posted October 20, 2003 Downshifting into second, surely you're slowing down too much Quote
StuartMackay Posted October 20, 2003 Posted October 20, 2003 Have to slow down a bit to get it into the garage Quote
Blatman Posted October 21, 2003 Posted October 21, 2003 OK, can't find the GL ratings for the MT75, but I have found a page of useful info here... It looks suspiciously like a Haynes manual in PDF format. Skip to page 17 for the gearbox oil specs. It covers both MT75, and Type 9 oils, although it only gives the Ford tech spec numbers, rather than GL numbers. However, the Ford tech spec numbers are listed on the bottles of oil, so it's not difficult to check if you have the right one........Note that ATF is a totally different spec the the correct gearbox oil..... Chester Posted October 21, 2003 Posted October 21, 2003 Oh dear............... I topped my type 9 box up about 1500 miles ago with GL5 spec oil and haven't noticed any problems. Should I be worried? When next checking/topping up the box can I put GL4 oil in? Mark Quote
Blatman Posted October 21, 2003 Posted October 21, 2003 I topped my type 9 box up about 1500 miles ago with GL5 spec oil and haven't noticed any problems. What was in it already. If it has GL5 in it, and you've added more, then potentially you run the risk of baulky changes, and breaking a synchro ring. The risk increases with revs. When next checking/topping up the box can I put GL4 oil in? I personally wouldn't mix GL5 with GL4. I don't know that it would cause a problem, but with a choice between an expensive, and potentially a time consuming gearbox strip and rebuild, compared to a tenner on the right oil in the first place, it's a no brainer, IMHO...... If your box has GL5 in it, get it out (the oil) asap, and put GL4, or even better, Red Line MTL in there........ Quote
Chester Posted October 22, 2003 Posted October 22, 2003 I have no idea what was in before - I just looked through the oil spec sheet in my local Halfrauds which said Castrol something or other. It was only after reading this thread that I looked more closely at the bottle sitting on the shelf in my garage and discovered it was GL5 spec. I do know that the box was fitted about 5000 miles ago and was a reconditioned one supplied by Westfield - I have the receipt from the previous owner. Perhaps Westfield even suggested filling with ATF when the box was fitted. I don't know where to go from here - any more suggestions? Mark Quote
Blatman Posted October 22, 2003 Posted October 22, 2003 Tough choice..... If you have any doubt that the oil in there may not be the correct spec, then you need to get it out, and fill it with the correct spec of oil. Or you can hope for the best/bury your head in the sand.......Harsh, maybe, but if you don't know what's in there, then you have a potentially expensive gearbox rebuild waiting to happen........I reckon draining the oil and putting the correct grade/type in will be lots cheaper, although time consuming, and annoying in the way that "avoidable aggro" is........ I realise that getting the oil out, in the absence of a drain plug (have you checked there definitely isn't a drain plug on the bottom of the 'box? ), is a time consuming job, but if you can find a length of hose, and a "sump pump" which you can attach to a drill, it can be done without having to take the engine and 'box out........
