brian.m Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 If its of any use to anyone? I drilled and tapped 2 x 1/8 bsp drain plugs into the bottom of my type 9, (a) cos I didnt know what was in there, and (b) cos I wanted to play around with synthetics. Tip, if you do this with the oil in, then all the crap should get fluhed out with the oil. Watch out for the sump magnet though. Brian. Quote
Turbo Tommo Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 Input shaft may have been a poor description, bit it's all the same piece of metal......... No it's not, mainshaft (which 5th gear sits on, but outside the main case) is separate to the input shaft, but fits into it and rotates independently. You were in bed wern't you? Tommo draws level Quote
Blatman Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 No, I've been out since about 10.00 this morning....... I'm gonna scan and e-mail you the diagram......give me a moment........ Please note that I did say that I may not be reading the diagram correctly, but there are definitely NO gears in the tail shaft......... Quote
Blatman Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 Hey Tommo................. what's your e-mail address. I've got a piccy for ya............ It's quite large (4.9mb ), so I may zip it............... Handy though.....tell me what you think............ Quote
Turbo Tommo Posted December 24, 2002 Posted December 24, 2002 john.tomlinson@sjpp.co.uk.......get it zipped...back on friday Quote

Sheepy Posted October 17, 2003 Posted October 17, 2003 Blatman, I've had to drag this old link back up for a question. You mentioned that GL5 is too slippery for the meshes.... I was just about to check the oil level on my type 9 for the first time and so I have no idea whether it'll need 2cc or 200cc..my question is that I have GL5, can I use it? How bad is it? are we talking for racing purposes (not me) or is it a general thing? I checked this board 5 mins before doing the level check and so stopped me in my tracks. Thanks Gaz Quote
Thrustyjust Posted October 17, 2003 Posted October 17, 2003 I had problems with EP80 with 1st and 2nd gears when cold.I was told this was an inherent problem with the T9 box and to use the comma atf, which is red and runny.Never had any problems after that and apparently the same as the Silkolene stuff, just cheaper and different packaging. Nick A Posted October 17, 2003 Posted October 17, 2003 Hi worked on Fords at amain dealer for a few years and we used to put Castrol SMX in the type nine gearboxes. Quote
Blatman Posted October 18, 2003 Posted October 18, 2003 Sheepy. DO NOT USE GL5........potentially, your synchros won't work properly, and you'll break them....... Use *any* proprietary mineral EP80 or EP90, or Synthetic EP75/90 to GL4 spec. "Normal" oils may take a little while to warm up, so expect slightly notchy changes when cold. It'll be fine once warm. I don't think Castol SMX is available anymore. I think ATF is GL5, and even if it isn't, it's for auto boxes and power steering pumps. I wouldn't use it, especially when the right oil is next to it on the shelf......... For top performance, use Red Line MTL, from Fluke Motorsport.. It's the tits....... FWIW, both my type 9's use ordinary EP90. One of them is a staright cut Quaife 'box that *never* gets a chance to get properly warm, and *always* gets thrashed mercilessly on the sprints and hills. It takes 240bhp without any trouble so far. HOWEVER, next time it comes out of the car, Red Line MTL is going in it........ Quote
Nick A Posted October 19, 2003 Posted October 19, 2003 Castrol smx is still listed on merlin motorsports web page here Quote
Blatman Posted October 19, 2003 Posted October 19, 2003 Fair enough. My thinking was that Castrol used to make a gearbox oil specifically to Ford specs. It's that that has been discontinued, and I was thinking that it was called SMX. However, ALL gearbox oil bottles contain detailed specs in the form of code numbers, on the label. Learn what the type 9 spec is, and get reading the labels. Last time I checked at Halfords there were two suitable (ie, specific to Ford gearboxes) non synthetic EP oils available off the shelf..... Sheepy Posted October 20, 2003 Posted October 20, 2003 Thank You to all, I haven't touched the GL5 since, I put it in the rear diff as a top up and haven't had any problems since. I went to most motor factors to find a GL4, but all now sell GL5. Anyway, I went to a small shop that seemed to have stuff on the shelf from all eras and picked up some Castrol GL4. I'll be using it over the next few days. Thanks again...Sheepy. (on to my type M16 caliper retraction problems now) Quote
Enterpryse Posted October 20, 2003 Posted October 20, 2003 Uh Ohh, have I just wasted some money of the GL4 Semi Synth from Halfrauds :-( Stuart Quote
