F1 Farce - Red Bull Protest Rule Change And

Those that follow the sport will know that 3 races ago the FIA announced a new interpretation of the regulations covering off throttle engine maps, effectively banning off throttle engine exhaust blown diffusers

Essentially, Red Bull have been dominating F1 for the past 2 & 1/2 seasons utilising a system which generates down force via the use of exhaust gases being blown over aerodynamic devices under the car (the diffuser). This year it became evident that the Renault engined cars had taken this concept to ludicrous proportions where, even when the driver took his foot off the throttle the engine continued to run at up to 90% fuel capacity solely to produce down force.

Having had the FIA announced ban 6 weeks ago, Red Bull took no action until this morning, first practice at Silverstone, where they and the other Renault engined cars protested the FIA's action with Renault threatening to withdraw from F1. The FIA have caved in and are allowing the Renault cars to run with up to 50% fuelling off throttle while ENFORCING THE BAN on the other teams.

The result will be between 0.5 and 1s per lap additional advantage to Red Bull.

Though utterly pathetic on the part of the FIA the worst thing is the confirmation that Renault's Singapore GP action (where Alonso won as a direct result of his team mate deliberately crashing and causing an ideally timed safety car) and a string of similar prior actions were not isolated cases implying that they and their teams are rotten to the core

Ban ALL EBDs by enforcing the 2012 exhuast regulations now, there is precedent

I'm struggling a little with the logic here, are you saying that Red Bull Racing, because they run a Renault engine are "rotten to the core"?

Yep, absolute farce.  You may mock Indy Car racing and NASCAR and yellow flags and oval racing all you wish, and you will have some fair points, but at least they're racing as equals.  F1 is a joke, and I've stopped watching it some time ago.

1st off I like jokes , this is a good one . the FIA are playing games , rules are decided and agreed pre season so why should they be changed mid season ?

Ho! hang on , is not Jean Todt some big shot in the  FIA , now he wouldnt have anything to do with that , would he   :sheep:

Can you indicate where this has been published please? As quoted here the statement appears to be a mix of two separate issues.

Renault have always explained they need to run the engine with a large amount of throttle on overrun to help with exhaust valve cooling and thus provide FIA required reliability. They do not appear to inject fuel on overrun.

AIUI Mercedes are the team that wants to inject fuel on overrun but that is banned by the rule change.

I can find no reports (across about 6-7 F1 news sites) of what is quoted earlier giving Red Bull the advantage stated above.

in fairness to renault tho, it is like theyve been penalised for having the best equipment, surely if yo udesign the best technology, you deserve teh reward? clearly what is needed is there to be discovered by the other teams to develop an as effective version for their own cars?

Nothing like an F1 thread to bring out no factual responses.

All the teams can run either 50% no fueling of 10% with fueling on the overrun.

Full  marks to Renault for another inovative idea (mass dampers, TT driveshaft, etc)
