Steering Rack Extensions

Guys,

I'm unsure whether my maths is failing me or I'm missing the point.

The Sierra steering rack is approx 1260mm long.

The SDV build supplement says screw the lock nuts to the bottom of the thread at each end then reduce the overall length to 965mm, ie cut off 147mm from each end.

Problem: each existing thread is approx 60mm long so the whole thing gets cut off!

Any ideas?

Thanks

James

just an idea not to sure how the sierra rack works, but can you wind the steering arms into the rack like on the mk11 escort one. that way you might not need to cut off so much of the thread, it would still make little room for adjustment of the tracking though.

I questioned this recently and then measured their SDV demonstrator. the  965mm does make sense but make sure you have the right rack, I know of one other person who was sent the wrong one.  I also have the measurement between centres of the rod ends if that helps, measured as acurately as poss with a tape measure (just its at the garage where I am building, not here at the PC).

Luckily mine ties in with theirs OK after the mods, but beware it still looks like its towing out with no adjustment to toe in. They said this was OK and would be fine once the car was on the floor.

Do you have the SDV supplement? I can send a copy if required.

Cheers

Stuart

Spoke to Mark at Westfield today...it seems like it is a Mk2 Escort rack I need.

So much for the SINGLE donor vehicle! :p

Stuart - thanks for the offer of the SDV supplement - I've already got one.

To be fair to them they do state that the rack is supplied by them and that the only parts from the steering from the donor is the top/bottom column. I hope your not intending to use the OEM carb and manifold ???

If you want a history of dangler ups I'd be happy to oblige, the latest being that the engine mount on the nearside has been drilled as a mirror image of the corresponding holes in the chassis (worth a check).

Cheers though & good luck

Stuart
