Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted June 13, 2011 Author Posted June 13, 2011 liking that Alfa always fancied one of those - think its the wheels Quote
Dibby Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Big soft spot for the GTAs, very nearly bought a 156GTA estate after the 147. There's something about Alfas and the cliches are all true, you forgive the heartache and glueing bits back on in the rain for that one day everything is working together. Quote
Howard Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 1. Alfasud 1.5 Sprint Veloce. Pretty, precise handling, and oh - the sound Plus it had been my father's. Shame about the rust. 2. Citroen GSA Pallas. Quirky, individual, versatile, years ahead of it's time. Wonderful ride. Shame about the rust. 3. Volvo 850 T5 Estate. Fast, luxurious, versatile. Shame about the fuel consumption. Quote

double-trouble Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 1964 Austin Mini 850............The one with the gian steering wheel, gooseneck gear stick, sliding windows, drawstring door pulls & starter button on the floor. Sorry to re-awken this one - but, after much thought (and putting the westy to one side). 1+ on the austin min 850! Coincidentally mine was a '64 too but, I hasten to add it was nearly 30 years old when I had it. Very origional 25,000 miles only - used it as a run about. A mazda 616 coupe (a capri rival with a decent OHC motor and same rear axle setup as my live axle SE). Mine had one previous owner - and had done *542,000* miles - yes really! (on it's 3rd engine). It looked like it had been dragged from a canal but would out drag a lot of stuff (it ended up with a 2.3Ltr tuned motor - twin 45 dcoes etc). Defender 110 Td5 (not strictly mine, belonged to work this one - but I did 100,000 miles in it). I guess the common factor is character and "Ronseal Motoring" - no pretence, no airs and graces just honest workhorses. To me everything is a bit to sanitised and "focus group" nowadays, if you catch my drift... Is it my age? Quote

Chris.B Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 My three most memorable that I've owned ... 1) Vauxhall Viva 1256 bought in 1974 as it was my first car. 2) Humber Sceptre: Twin carb, awesome interior, with overdrive on 3rd & 4th gears. bought in 1977. 3) Peugeot 205 GTi T16 homologation special (the Group B rally 205). Bought in 1988. Mentally quick very rare 4WD turbo. 500bhp on low boost. Remember strapping a baby seat into the passengers side one day when my fleet car was off the road & wife had gone outr in hers! Quote
double-trouble Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Loved that little car......... Yeah - me too. mine was 5 years older than me I liked all the bits you mentioned - plus the exterior hinges, the bit of plastic coated wire that stopped the boot opening too far, and the floor mounted starter switch. Oh, and the classic whine that the drop gears made - I'd kinda missed that until I dropped the straight cut box into the westy... I also liked buying tyres (£12 each) and a full exhaust - manifold to tip (£10.50) from the main dealer including vat. And this wasn't that long ago really. Gah I'm boring - I'm gonna shut up now! Maybe we should colate everyones votes into a popularity league table? Quote
boris77 Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 1. Renault 4 GTL. Quirky and a hoot to drive (three wheels round corners). Think it had all of 34BHP, down hill on the dual carriage way you could get the speedo off the end. Shame the rust got it and the near-side rear trailing arm broke off. 2. VW Passat GT 16v (Estate), super comfortable, handled well and a bit different for a 21 year old to own. Same engine as the Golf GTi, shame the gearbox gave up the ghost. (Nothing to do with me thrashing the guts out of the car..). 3. Mk2 Skoda Octavia Vrs (petrol). Dispite the pee-taking I got for owning a Skoda, one of my fav's. Quote
Tubs Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 1) Opel Manta GTE - Fast, comfortable and kinda cool. 2)Honda CRX VTi - Even faster and done thousands of trouble free miles, track days all sorts and only cost me £2,500. 3) Any one of 7 original minis. All a hoot to drive. Tubs Quote
