combatsapph Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 I've only had three cars :-( First car bought 1999 - 1987 Sierra Sapphire 2.0i Ghia Auto - lovely car, converted it to manual, tuned up the Pinto engine in it, modded the bodywork - lovely blue respray. Terminal rust got it in the end. 2nd car - built Westfield out of the above Sierra. 3rd car - Scorpio Cosworth as a commuting car - only Y reg in existence, last Cosworth Ford ever built. If the Scorpio dies I'll have another at the drop of a hat - truly excellent car. Quote
mikef Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Very first car - Austin/Nash Metropolitan - an ugly as sin ragtop but fun. Second - Sunbeam Alpine - the one with the sharp fins. Third - Lancia Beta Estate - great fun before it rusted away. Quote

JustCallMeMac Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 OK, whilst I'm waiting for the Grand Prix to start!! 1. Lancer Evo 6 GSR - When Autocar reviewed this back in March 1999, I just had to have one. Must have read and re-read that article 100 times and it still excites me today! http://www.lancerregister.com/art_autocarevo6.php#/ A trip to Ralliart in the Midlands, for a test drive, a few weeks later and I'd signed on the dotted line. I'd never driven anything like it. Rare as 'rocking horse poo' back then but I lived the dream although got myself in to a fair amount of debt as a result! Worth it completely though and put a smile on my face everytime I turned the key. Looking back, probably far too young to appreciate what a machine it was! 2. Alfa 156 GTA - Great sound, great character, aggressive looks and a sweet, sweet 3.2 V6! Had it's quirks and issues but I felt a proper Petrolhead when behind the wheel! 3. Subaru Impreza Hawkeye STI - the last iconic Impreza. Modified to 400bhp and fully sorted the suspension, chassis and stopping. Makes the Evo seem like a nunney cat! But for fun and games and pure 'smiles for miles,' at any speed and especially in the sunshine, this recent aquisition is gonna take some beating! Steve Quote

Dibby Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 MKII Escort 1.3L: 1st car, I was 17, the car was 18, she taught me how to hang the A*** end out round roundabouts and donuts on the local common. Alfa 147: Hilarious fun to drive, quicker than anything in its class, stuck like the proverbial to an army blanket, but it spent more time in the garage than on the road, loved the curved dash, moleskin, red leather, it was gorgeous inside compared to a Focus or a Golf. The Westie: Love it love it love it. Bike engined fun, back is in half, ears are ringing, eaten a pound of road gravel and flies, my right ankle goes numb after too long, but it gives me a huge grin. lippydave Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 I'm a serial car buyer, but the three I've enjoyed most as silly/fun driver's cars were 1. Mazda RX7 FD3 Type R (Sweetly steerable on the right pedal, brilliant combination of punch and engaging delicacy...) 2. Subaru Impreza Type RA WRX STI (Imperious real roads/world A to B pace, especially in the wet....) 3. Peugeot 205GTI 1.9 (Chuckable, cheap, direct, and tactile...) Loads of Kraut barges which have been better everyday cars, but that's not what we're counting is it? Quote
Dibby Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 I'll be perfectly honest' date=' and I suppose show my old fogey credentials for the world to see But in a non-competition environment, where fair do's every last (legal) advantage is needed. I don't "get" the modern performance car "thing", the whole active diff, active suspension, flappy paddle gear change with auto blip and ecu controlled engine during shifts sort of leaves me a little cold. Where's the joy of getting a heal and toe change "just so", or the feel of a car "moving round" a little and responding to a feathered throttle? Plus my own experience has tended to be that all the hi tech stuff tends to push the ability of a car so far beyond what's possible on the public highway, that it takes an exceptional car to still provide the same driving pleasure at much lower levels.[/quote'] Very true GM, that's why I love the Westie so much. No ABS, traction control, anti yaw system. It's raw, instant mechanical fun. Never had any 'performance' cars as such for getting to work and back, the lad next door to me was into his fun cars when we were at school, his first car was a 1275GT Mini with a Weber, straight through exhaust, ported and polished head, we nearly died so many times in that bright green Mini. He went on to a Lancia Delta Integralle, he'd drive it back and forth to Germany in the Army. Last year he was shot and killed in Afghanistan, his parents were given his bank account and found £12.5k so they spent it on bringing the Lancia back to life. They've just got it back on the road as a gleaming example of his pride and joy and they'll be taking it to car shows to raise money for Help for Heroes with it Quote
Dommo Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 First off a MINI Cooper, of the big and fat variety. It leaked and rattled so was a true mini in many respects, from a distance. Or maybe that was just the British build quality shining through. Anyway, a very accomplished car, massive fun to drive and capabilities beyond mine. Probably the sole reason I didn't have an accident during my youth! In hindsight, I think my 'car knowledge' would have matured earlier had I not gone for a brand new car, but I don't regret it. Hell, they were even rare back then! Some time later, a Toyota Starlet GT Turbo import. Learned loads about the effects of tuning and the such. Wasn't a particularly great handling car, but was a pocket rocket in every sense of the word and could keep up with cars it had no right to even get close to. I just loved how nobody knew what it was, back when I was young and interested in traffic light grand prix. Lastly, I have a soft spot for fast estates. I don't know why, I just love the idea that an estate shouldn't be fast, so make one! I bought a BMW 328i touring (E36) with the full intention of sliding an M3 engine/box/diff in it, but otherwise keeping it fairly low key. In the end though, it never happened due to a distinct lack of planning. I spent too much of the budget on suspension so whilst it handled great, it lacked the theatre I wanted. In the end, I sold it and bought a 200sx. Big mistake, but did lead me on the path of a Westfield build in some weird way. Frankly, I'm surprised none of my land rovers have made it onto the list, but I think these are the three that have had the biggest impact on the "car life". Quote

Frankly "son", I'm lucky to be alive to tell the tale, particularly with the Torino. The Shelby was just awesome, but my favourite bit was the sticker on the dash that said "Warning - Do Not Roll Down Windows At Speeds Over 110 MPH" - this was mainly because if you did, it would blow the fixed quarterlight windows clean out! But that Torino... oh my. The amount of fuel I wasted at traffic lights blipping the throttle just to watch the shaker hood (bonnet) scoop air intake twitch like a race horse in the gates. Of course when gas was only 75 cents a gallon, it was no big deal to AVERAGE 9 mpg, but the steering wheel was just there for show once you hit about 90 mph, and the brakes were lamentable, which at least did teach me how to look WAY in advance in anticipate what others might do. More stories at a meeting, Dad PS: Do I get a Father's Day card now? Quote
D7PNY Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 There have been a few although nothing as cool as some of the machines folk in here have had!! Rover 220 Gsi Turbo - Forged bottom end etc etc etc. Went like stink! Clio 182 - Great fun little car! Final slot is a tie between these (all for different reasons!) Pathfinder - Awesome in the snow and great fun just wafting around in it! Rx8 - Had loads of problems with it and ended up with a refund after 6 months but still love it! (if a little thirsty for the performance!) And obviously my westfield beats all of the above but left it out as it's a little obvious... Cheers, Dave Quote
