Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 like most of you I have had some motors in my time - many pretty forgetable this is my top three - not much to do with being the best cars, but more the cars with the most character and memories attached to them 1. Rover SD1 Vitesse - a lumbering beast where virtually no working electrics but I loved this car - the way the car twisted when you planted your right foot 2. Alfasud 1.5ti - only had it for a few months before it went the way of the scrapyard due to terminal rust but that was a fabulous car around corners and sounding mint too - was any excuse to go out for a drive 3. Manta GTE - did a lot of miles in this car driving to speedway tracks all over the country with a top m8 of mine, never let me down, thrashed the living daylights out of it and sold it two years later for £100 more than I bought it for - and 20 years ago it was a pretty cool car IMO spill the beans Quote
Bob Green Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 OK, I will start. I converted a 1958 (I think) Standard 8 (or 10, I had both so stay with me, the running gear conversion was on both cars) with a SAH tuned Triumph Spitfire MK 111 Engine, Gearbox and Overdrive unit. Nothing special, I know but in the ‘60’s, I could take on the might of most up to maybe 90mph. Italian exotica to one side, of course. As an 18 year old youth, that car was the DB’s and I loved it. Edited to say: s**t, top three! My second car was an Anglia 105E to which had a 1,650cc engine with a Shorrock CB75 Supercharger. It went like hell. My third car is plastic; sports a Ford engine with a hairdryer and has “My Other Play Thing Has t**s” embroidered on the number plates. My best three cars. Quote
carpetstu Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 My favourities 1) Mercedes C180 P reg .... My first intro into Prestige cars and it was a pleasure to own and drive! 2) BMW 730d ... A balistic missile of a car and very well built. 3) Jaguar X type estate Premium .... Amazingly comfortable but not great on reliability. No major issues tho just bits and It was warranties so never bothered me too much? The Westfield would be up there too but I stuck to tin tops. The Porsche is too new to the fold to make it up into the top three yet! There is a few that I have owned that would make a very good crap list too Quote
Captain Colonial Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Besides the Westy... > 1966 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 in white with blue stripes... monster car, so much fun > 1971 Ford Torino with a 427 Cobrajet V8 and a shaker hood scoop, quarter mile demon with zero handling, but a rocket ship in a straight line > 1986 Audi Quattro, left people for dead on country roads and roundabouts Happy days! Quote
8pots Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 I have had a few...some have nearly bankrupted me, but on their day mine are 1. An E21 BMW 323i with a 2.5 engine. 12 rear tyres in 10 months! 2. 816 bhp 620lb ft Skyline GTR. Great when it worked, expensive when it did not 3. Mini 1450cc pickup Mike Quote
Norman Verona Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Apart from the 7, 1) Lotus Cortina 2) Alfa Romeo 1300 GT Junior 3) Lancia Integralle That is in chronilogical order Quote
RedditchJay Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 my top three very much Ford based... 1} my recent MK1 Mexico AVO in sebring red {orange} 2} my MK2 RS2000 flat front 3} my 1st ever car a Ford Orion 1.6D... slow as gods dog but my 1st car Quote
Nick Algar - Competition Secretary Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Top ones that I have owned, not including the Westie / Gould etc. 1) BMW M5 - E34, a real M5, no traction control, just power , great long distance car, did 100K miles in it. 2) Subaru WRX imported direct from Japan, wickedly quick anywhere. Drunk fuel like it was on a bender all the time 3) Renault 21 Turbo, the French Cossie, and no one ever expected it to be so quick, proper turbo lag Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Hmm, Westfield aside, 1. Fiesta Mk1 Supersport, first car I owned, uprated the suspension and added a quick rack. Rebuilt large chunks of the engine. Great fun handling, Peugeot 205 style lift off oversteer on demand. Drove it to Germany and back regularly when I lived over there for a year. Sadly the Autobahn's were the death of it 2. Toyota Celica Mk 3, cracking sports coupe in it's day, but the reason it always sticks in my mind, it was my first really decent car, after the usual student/first job old bangers. It was also the first car I'd had that you'd go miles out of your way, searching out the long way any ware, just to enjoy the drive for a bit longer. 3. Land Rover Discovery 4 HSE, still missing this one, though not the fuel bill hard to describe this one, bags of fun to drive, though you wouldn't exactly call it handling in the performance sense. But the most "complete" feeling car I've ever driven. Quote

OR a new Defender Quote
jak Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 Here are my choices: 1. 1985 Vauxhall Cavalier SRi, not actually my car - but Dads, although I drove it more than he did!! Back in the days when children could be named drivers on their parents insurance for sensible money! 2. 1978 Mk1 Fiesta 1.1 sport, not quick but great fun! Took loads of abuse and still kept going. 3. 1973 MGB (cuurent car), it's no street racer, but I love it's character and simplicity. Looking at other peoples lists, the common theme quite often is character and fun, but not necessarily speed. John Quote
stephenh Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 Apart from my Westie, I suppose my modified Frogeye Sprite, my Austin Healey 3000 (Mk IIA), and my 1300cc Cooper S. In that order. All a long time ago!! Mind, maybe the DBS Vantage should be in there somewhere, but that was never my everyday car, the others were. Quote
jerryhzx12 Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 As we seem to be lsiting our non-westfields.. 1. MGB Roadster - my first car - tatty, rusty, slow, money pit - loved it ! 2. Turbo Cavalier - great Q car, had a habit of eating tyres and cylinder heads, but always felt good driving it. 3. JZR 3 wheeler - hilarious drive, particularly the two wheel cornering....and the only car I seem to have owned which has cost me almost nothing to fuel and maintain - sad to see it go, but the wife wanted something with a full complement of wheels, which is what led me to my buying my Westie ! davidgh Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 Not the best cars (pace, handling, reliability) I've ever owned -- but the most memorable: Frog-Eye (138 ERT) B Roadster (1091 KX) 970 S (forgotten) Also: - memorable for being horibly unreliable (from new), Peugeot 504 - memorable only for being much less bad than I expected, 1500 Allegro forced on me for six months by my company. Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 I'll be perfectly honest, and I suppose show my old fogey credentials for the world to see But in a non-competition environment, where fair do's every last (legal) advantage is needed. I don't "get" the modern performance car "thing", the whole active diff, active suspension, flappy paddle gear change with auto blip and ecu controlled engine during shifts sort of leaves me a little cold. Where's the joy of getting a heal and toe change "just so", or the feel of a car "moving round" a little and responding to a feathered throttle? Plus my own experience has tended to be that all the hi tech stuff tends to push the ability of a car so far beyond what's possible on the public highway, that it takes an exceptional car to still provide the same driving pleasure at much lower levels.
