windy Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I see the planning application for the Curborough site has been withdrawn. Just received a letter about it from Lichfield council. Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Yep - the newhigh speed rail links going through it instead Quote
KerryS Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Are you sure? I was checking the route the other day and though close I thought it missed the track. Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Yep, the track will not go actually over the land which Curborough is on but close enough not to be able to sell new houses if they ever got built That will give the locals some real noise to complain about instead Quote
Mark Stanton Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 and also opens the door for commercial development rather than residential Quote

KerryS Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I assumed it was the track that was being talked about, but yes, the plan shows it nearby. Folks have the wrong idea about noise of railways, especially high speed ones. We often spend last nights in France alongside the high speed line to the tunnel, an occasional whoosh is all you get. I'd rather have that than a damn motorway droning away 24/7. We often take the boat underneath the M6 in Cheshire, blissfully quiet (relatively) for the couple of minutes you are underneath it, living hell either side. Quote
Ian Podmore Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 That will give the locals some real noise to complain about instead Thanks for your support! They have moved the proposed route from 100m away from our house now. Would have been like spagetti junction mark 2 as there are already 2 rail lines, one over the other, and they were proposing to put the HS2 over the top of both of them. It's now further North, closer to Curborough, and further from our house. As for railways being quiet......... If in cuttings then yes, otherwise no! Especially as the current proposal makes more use of viaducts than tunnels. Not that motorways are quiet though. I for one hope they don't build it. We have already got great rail service from Lichfield - 1hr 10 minutes to centre of London. Commutable and some neighbours do - daily! Quote
KerryS Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I don't quite know what to feel about HS2. Being involved in railways for my working life, I support it. But I am not convinced that the country is big enough, geographically, to need it. France and Germzny are quite different with the demographics being what they are. And noise: if you do a track safety course, you'd be amazed how close they are before they can kill you! Quote

Ian - my comment was aimed at the local houses to Curborough who regularly complain about the circuit noise even after moving close to it whilst knowing it existed! I sympathise with you on the proposed rail route proximity to your house but I doubt it will ever happen Quote
Ian Podmore Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 John, missed a smily with my post. Oops! I doubt it will happen either for a few reasons. First is as Kerry has pointed out, the country isn't big enough. When you factor in the time to get from home to centre of Birmingham, or Manchester or Leeds, the time saving of the faster trains is just not significant. Add to that the fact that it would cost more to use than the existing network why would you bother Secondly the economics don't stack up. In the costings they have got they have assumed all the business travellers on the train will not be working..... I for one can work from when I get on to when I get off, not that I have used the train very often as car just works better unless going in centre of London. It would be paid for privately so the figures need to stack up. Channel Tunnel, M6 Toll have gone so well before it! They also reckon that the railway would move more work away from the South East. Cloud cuckoo land again. Don't worry though, we are all paying for the work being carried out on the feasibility of it. Off now to see how close it does go to Curborough! Quote
Terry Everall Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 As a railway civil engineer for 44 years I agree that the need for a high speed route is not proven. However the politicians and powers that be always seem to support high speed routes. What we need is lomger and more platforms with more frequent reliable trains. I can already do York to Kings Cross in 1 hour 50 mins so why spend billions to go faster? Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 so why spend billions to go faster? Made me laugh Terry. how is the most recent engine coming along? Quote
KerryS Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I suppose what HS2 could do is speed up journeys like Leeds to Lille sort-of-thing; journey times within GB could shorten but law of diminishing returns sets in. Quote
