Nigel P
I am currently installing a new Vulcan crossflow engine. I am also replacing my 4 speed gearbox with a five speed type 9. I understand I need a modification for the drive shaft. Is this correct and where can I get one?
DickieB
You're correct - the 5 speed is longer so your prop will need to be shorter - you may also need a different mounting bracket for the box. If no one else offers advice, then buy a copy of Which Kit mag - in the back of it you will find loads of adverts, one of which is a well respected prop firm. Where abouts are you in the country - it will help people offer you prop firms? Dickie
Nick Dunn
I repalced what I thought was a 4 speed type 9 box with a 5 speed version. They were exactly the same length "flange to flange" so to speak, using the same bell housing. Maybe my original 4 speed box was not a type 9 ? Better have another look in the garage when I get home. Guest
Shortly after buying my Westy I had a 4 speed to 5 speed type 9 conversion done by my local garage. The garage owner suggested that a prop shaft mod would be probably be necessary. However no such a mod was mentioned when I came to pay. Now he's a good bloke, but I can't imagine that he would have done it for nothing. Therefore it can't have been required. I suspect that there are probably lots of variants of 4 speed and that some of them are the same length as a type 9, 5 speed. MikeR
It all depends on what sort of 4 speed box you have. www.robs7.com details this a bit as does burtons catalogue. Basically if you've got a type C box then this grew into the type N or type 9 so you don't need a change. If you've got an escort, type A or type B box then you need the prop modifying (well okay a new one). How to tell the difference .... errm, look at robs site or burton's catalogue.
