Radiators and fans

Evening all,

I have a 1992 SE - Yet to be completed and I am the fourth owner!  It has a 1600 X-Flow.

The radiator that is fitted looks very small and additionally has a filler cap and overflow connection.  I have been reading posts about connecting up the cooling system and I think that an additional filler cap and overflow (as well as the ones in the thermostat housing and the header tank) is going to confuse things!

I guess I need a Polo radiator.  (Mk 1 1050)?

What power engine is this suitable for?

What fan should I fit?

Many thanks

Polo rad is a wise choice. Probably OK for 200bhp+, so i think it will be OK for a Xflow

Just guessing, but I reckon at present it is fitted with a Mk2 Escort rad. Unless you have serious power from your Xflow, should be ok as long as you get the  reat of the system sorted.

Fit an expansion tank as high as possible in the engine bay (Volvos are an ideal donor), best place is probably on the scuttle panel. Fit a flat rad cap to your existing radiator, and plumb the overflow pipe to tbhe 'degassing' pipe (the small one) on the expansion tank. Plumb the 1/2 inch hose on the bottom of the tank into the top hose (I found a 'T' piece off the a Mk3 Escort did the trick).

Without the expansion tank correctly plumbed in, the xflow lump is prone to airlocks and throwing it's coolant out at high revs.

HTH Stu.

a capri rad (1.6 or 2.0) has the same fittings as an escort one but is larger and can be bought for small money, plumb it in like stu said with a blanking cap on the top. i've used one for 5 years on my xflow with no overheating probs.

I'll be using the one on this page, just as soon as I get around to fitting it........on a 230bhp Cossie engine. I'm not concerned that it won't be up to the job.............
