£5750 won't take long to count - check 'em all, not just every so many. My buyer wasn't offended when I did that, last month - all £6600... It's another alarm bell if he objects. He should be happy to bring proof of address. I can't remember if you need it when you fill out the V5 for an overseas buyer - check the "notes" booklet from DVLA.

Well spotted NIK!!

I feel a bit more at ease now. Lets hope he actually wants to buy it. All done by email so far. Good point about the proof address.  :D

Wouldn't hurt to drop him the link to this thread on an email, showing that not only are you being careful, you've got friends in the UK and on the continent who are backing you up.  If he was at all dodgy, he'd never show up.

 Maybe something a bit more subtle, like "I told all my Westfield friends I was selling the car and look at the response I got!  Westie owners really are a very tight-knit community and as you can see, you'll have good friends once you've bought it."

I counted all the notes when I sold my VX220 last Friday... all £9,950 roughly split 50/50 in £10s and £20s, it took me 15 minutes  :0  :D

You WILL need his address. Therefore, to ask for proof of it is not unreasonable.

What to do if you are selling your vehicle privately to someone who does not have a GB address

You should fill in sections 6 and 10 with the new keeper’s name and address. Both you and the new keeper (buyer) must sign and date the declaration in section 8. Give the whole V5C to the new keeper to aid registration abroad. You should then send a signed letter to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AG giving the vehicle’s registration number, the make and model of the vehicle, the date of sale or transfer, and the name and address of the new keeper.

Eh? All I've ever done is given the V5 do the buyer and sent the purple bit to Swansea. ???

Praps also ask him to bring the receipt from where he had the money changed to sterling.

For sales to GB addresses, it's your responsibility as seller to notify DVLA - and send them the V5C, though you both sign the V5C. Buyer then just holds onto the green tear-off bit. If the car is being exported, it's assumed the V5C document may be required at some point, so for non-GB addresses you fill in the V5C as/where required, but then the buyer takes the V5C with the car, and seller sends DVLA a letter. It's in the Guide notes sent out with the V5C's - or here clicky

:t-up:

For Belgium : the buyer needs the V5, otherwise he won't be able to register the car.

If the seller keeps the V5 and sends it back to the DVLA, then the DVLA is not supposed to issue a new V5 for the new owner since he has no UK adress ! If the DVLA officer is friendly, he will send the old V5 to the new owner... but the officer can also throw it in the bin ! Then the V5 is lost and the buyer will have to request a certificate of permanent export to the DVLA.

Not sure about the UK but here in France the buyer writes the date and time of the transaction on the carte grise (French V5c). This is to ensure that if he takes the car and drives through a camera at twice the speed of sound you won't be picking up the bill.

Another point, but probably not relevant here, is to ensure if you get the correct address (ie country) on the V5c. I bought a LHD Pug 806 from the UK and asked the vendor to put my UK address on the V5c. He put my French address on it. DVLA wrote to me and informed me that I couldn't register a car in France and they had exported the car and retained the V5c. I wrote back and gave them my UK address but they said too late, take the car to a police station who will issue a certificate of the VIN/Index mark and I can re-apply for a new registration. By this time the car was in FRance.

Took me 14 months to get a French registration without a V5c (The French think it's proof of ownership)
