Nic Chase (NICO) - Shropshire & Mid-Wales AO Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I have a potential buyer coming from Belgium on Sunday ( "jimmy behets" ) to buy my car. He is bringing sterling. Is he familiar to anyone and are there any potential pitfalls to accepting cash?Because its a Sunday going to the bank is not an option. Anything else to watch out for? Thanks in advance. Quote
Blatman Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 If he's bringing cash, make sure it's real. It may be worth borrowing a UV cash scanner (actually any black light source should do) or one of those fake bank note detector pens just to be on the safe side. Plenty of info on your favourite search engine Quote
Captain Colonial Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I'd also ask to scan his passport and driving license, as well as ask for a recent utility bill, to cross-reference the validity of his identity. Quote
Nic Chase (NICO) - Shropshire & Mid-Wales AO Posted July 6, 2010 Author Posted July 6, 2010 Thanks all. Blatman - hadn't thought about a cash scanner. My main concern is that the cash is real. Not sure what he looks like, got the impression he liked motoring. Wanted to stay and watch the British GP!!! Quote
chris7273 Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Pay attention : The adress is no more present on the belgian ID cards. You should ask him to bring an invoice from the electricity company where his name and adress appear.... So you can check the adress that he will write on the invoice. Success. Quote
Blatman Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 As long as the cash is real, I'd not be bothered about anything else... Quote
echoz Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Worth mentioning to check the money in segments, so like every £200 check a note etc encase the 1st £1000 is real the rest isn't Quote
Blatman Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Check every note. A genuine buyer won't mind... Quote
echoz Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I spose its worth the extra couple of minutes thinking about it, I dunno why i didn't say that blatters lol Also.... what you buying next? Quote

Nic Chase (NICO) - Shropshire & Mid-Wales AO Posted July 6, 2010 Author Posted July 6, 2010 Just ordered UV scanner. Hope its here before the weekend. I am mainly concerned the notes are genuine. Thats why I asked for Sterling not Euros, not sure what they look like !!!! Quote
echoz Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 in theory he will be taking them straight out the bank, worth rmemebering the bank only give out the "new" £20 notes now as their taking the old ones out of circulation as far as i'm aware Quote
nik9669 Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 £5750 won't take long to count - check 'em all, not just every so many. My buyer wasn't offended when I did that, last month - all £6600... It's another alarm bell if he objects. He should be happy to bring proof of address. I can't remember if you need it when you fill out the V5 for an overseas buyer - check the "notes" booklet from DVLA. Quote
lippydave Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Just ordered UV scanner. Hope its here before the weekend. I am mainly concerned the notes are genuine. Thats why I asked for Sterling not Euros, not sure what they look like !!!! I sold a German registered car in Germany (pre-Euro currency), to a girl in the office where I worked. Like a good little fraulein she paid me in Deutschmarks..... I was flying to the UK for the weekend and had a few beers in Frankfurt airport.......Found a currency place offering a seemingly decent rate, so traded the lot for sterling.....Being a trusting sort I din't check it, and instead went back to the bar for a few more before the flight was called...... Not long after take off, I thought to have a quick looksee and put the cash ina more convenient place to carry...... My heart sank as I cracked open the envelope and found some some really odd looking twenty pound notes looking back mockingly at me........ When I landed and cleared customs I phoned the wife and started gibbering nonsense.....She laughed at me and pointed out the fact that a new 20 pound note had been introduced to the UK that week...having been in das Vaterland I was blissfully unaware and thought I'd been stung...
