Fat Albert
Having acquired an 83 built Eleven this week (chassis no 58, original Sprite [74] mechanicals, stored last 10 years), please advise regarding surface corrosion on exposed (painted) chassis tubes. Next winter (03/04) I intend to do a full rebuild and will get the chassis painted or powder coated, in the mean time whats the best solution to protect from further decay? In the affected areas the paint lifts off with my scraper (a broken chisel) exposing shiny tube. I thought of using Hammerite (now there's a Newbie suggestion)
JamesD
Powder coating is definetly the way to go in the long term. In the meantime get hold of some good quality anti-rust primer from a specialist paint shop, strip down to bare metal, and then paint over with a good quality weatherproof metal paint. Regards, JD btw, the Hammerite range of automotive paints are good, they also do a decent brush/spary on anti-rust primer
Blatman
Yep, I'd second James' advice. Carefully clean the rust off, making sure that it is just surface rust, and re-paint in the short term, with some sort of corrosion inhibiting primer and then a topcoat or two of Hammerite smooth. CateringVan
I've not tried this stuff, but there are several people on blatchat who prefer Frost POR-15 to hammerite as they reckon it doesnt chip quite so easily
