No Fear Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 Hi everyone, i must admit to being a lurker on here for some time but i have decided to take the plunge and start building a westfield after xmas I am going to buy a starter kit and go from there and i have a few questions for you all: 1) I'm planning to use a standard Vauxhall 16V, what sort of power would this produce and would you suggest any cheap improvemnts that would be beneficial? 2) The car will be in use all year which means i'll have to mess around with windscreens, wipers, heaters etc so i can have a hood (damm shame cos i love that aero screen ) Anyway, just how waterproof is the hood for our wonderful english weather? 3) Stupid question - anyone got any rough dimensions for the bootbox? 4) Oh, and what size wheels and tyres do you recommend for road use? Well, thats about it, any general tips would be appreaciated and i thankyou in advance for your feedback Cheers Quote
Blatman Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 My favourite answer...................... Use the search function................. If you've been lurking for a while, you must've read a fair bit of what's there already. The rest is pretty easy stuff to search for. However.......... 1) Cheap improvements over what? 2) I use my car all year, and don't even own a hood. Never have. If it's to be a daily driver, then fair enough, but if it's a second car, why bother? Aeroscreens are supposed to be much better than screen an' doors, buffeting wise, so if you want an aeroscreen, do it......... 3) Not big enough......... 4) 13x6, or 15x7, depending on how much "dual usage" you want, how much you want to spend on wheels and tyres, and how sticky you want the tyres to be. Phssthpok Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 Well, that’s about it, any general tips would be appreciated and I thank you in advance for your feedback “Oh and don't forget to join the WSCC - www.wscc.co.uk to download a membership form,” Mr Stanton will say at any moment. Quote
Phssthpok Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 I think it's Matt's bit on the side. I'll get my coat....... Quote
damianc Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 Nice one Matt. That embedded quote wibble thing just told my netscape to f**k off wrt hoods. I use my car every day. No roof, no sidescreens & just an aeroscreen. Dress appropriately to the weather and it's not a problem. Check out what bikers wear in the winter - they're not cold/wet I'll support the comment about buffeting - get an aeroscreen, forget the roof it's more of a hindrance than a help and it won't keep you dry Quote
stu999 Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 1) I'm planning to use a standard Vauxhall 16V, what sort of power would this produce and would you suggest any cheap improvemnts that would be beneficial? They were quoted as 150 bhp in standard form, but with junking the standard injection system (has to be done. No room under the bonnet for it) and fitting Webers/throttle bodies will release another 25 to 30 gee-gees. 2) The car will be in use all year which means i'll have to mess around with windscreens, wipers, heaters etc so i can have a hood (damm shame cos i love that aero screen ) Anyway, just how waterproof is the hood for our wonderful english weather? As damianc says, get the aeroscreen. And with the money saved on not buying the weather gear, get yourself some M/C waterproofs. 3) Stupid question - anyone got any rough dimensions for the bootbox? Nothing if you are carrying weather gear around, 'just in case'. 4) Oh, and what size wheels and tyres do you recommend for road use? My choice would probably be 15 inch with Yoko A539's. Good all rounders, plenty of grip, and wont wear out instantly. HTH Stu. Quote
No Fear Posted October 17, 2002 Author Posted October 17, 2002 Okay, thanks for the answers, sounds like plenty of power to scare myself with And i think i'll go for the aero screen then and when it rains i'll get wet, it's worth it for a car that looks that cool! Cheers Quote
damianc Posted October 17, 2002 Posted October 17, 2002 I'm running 13" rims; 1) the tyres are cheaper 2) check out the tyre size threads for reasons why Falken ze502 are a reasonable road compromise of grip and wear and are about £35 inc VAT valve and balance A021/A032 will be about 60 each all in, but are much softer. You have to be careful with the 032's in the wet Quote
