Blatman Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Start with the gearbox... seriously... A standard type 9 has crap ratios. Stick in "long first" box from BGH or SPC and you'll be amazed at how much better the car is to drive. You'll think you've found 30bhp and it should work out cheaper than head work / cams etc, but... once you have a decent gearbox, you can get on with the engine at a later date and never have to touch the 'box again. There's plenty of advice on ratios in the archives... Quote

rose5691 Posted April 2, 2010 Author Posted April 2, 2010 Just seems like a lot of work? Do you know anywhere near London that I could trust fot cams etc..? Quote
Blatman Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Gearbox swap is waaaay easier than head work IMHO... No valves to grind, no cams to time, no head gasket to fit and worry about. A staright box out / box in swap is do-able in 6 hours easy. My record is a little over 4... As for trust, do you mean buying from or for doing the work? 'Cos if you want someone to do the work for you, it's gonna cost a lot, and the extra horsepower you find on a Zetec may well not be as large as you imagne. They can be pricy to get above 220bhp if you aren't doing it yourself, and they're not cheap even before the big numbers start to flow... Quote
Bob Green Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Burton could supply stuff I guess but a good car is not all about power output. Quote
