MattBone
I thought that I would chuck this one up to see if any of you inspired westie people could help me make a decision... I'm looking @ buying an SEiGHT in the next week or so... I have two options open to me: 1). A pukka 3.5i V8 2). Not quite as tidy 3.9 Does the size difference make any odds??? As I'm not a track junkie (yet) or interested in Sprints... just cruising the costal roads of Dorset. And can I get the 3.5 tuned into anything different if needs be? Or is it new engine time - when I get bored??? And whilst I'm at it should I buy from a reputed specialist or buy private??? I've worked hard for my money and I don't want to buy a duffer Any suggestions/advice would be gratefully received. Thanks - Matt
peterg
Matt, as no-one's answered you yet, here's my twopence worth..... You can always get the engine tuned later, there are several reputable V8 tuners (John Eales is probably the best from what I've heard)...have a look at Ian Crocker's site here for more info If the 3.9's 'untidiness' is just cosmetic, it can be fixed up, it's the engine and other mechanicals that are the biggest cost ie. complete new bodywork is only about £1000 or so but a new 'tuned' engine etc would come to a lot more ££££££ If you're just cruising and not racing it won't really matter which you have it'll be great Regading buying trade or private, again, there's no real guarantee that either is 'better' as it all depends how the car was put together and sometimes talking to the guy who's done it is more reassuring than all the salespeak from a salesman at a dealer as you can get an idea of whether the right amount of care went into it. Good luck whichever you get.....and tell us all about it
Mike H
Carb or fuel injection may also make a big difference. With a carb there's obviously less to go wrong but I would have thought more difficult to keep even semi decent mpg when you start tuning. I would buy private unless you live near the dealer. It's not worth the dealer premiums if you are never likely to take the car back as it's 200 miles away. Captain Colonial
What is it the yanks say "there's no substitute for cubes" Ooooo, we say LOTS of things like that, equally illuminating: "When in doubt, whip it out!" "She was born at the top of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down" "When in danger If's there's doubt Run in circles Scream and shout" "Have a nice day!" "Missing you already!" "My brother Jeb says it's a done deal" ...or any number of inane things you'll find my fellow countrymen on holiday saying in Stratford-on-Avon, Warwick Castle, Anne Hathaway's Cottage, ad nauseum - which is why you will NEVER find me there. Makes my skin crawl when I see one in a striped shirt, checked shorts, white socks, hat two cameras and a guide book. Sorry, rant over. I'll just get me coat...
