Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Got a Citroen C8 family motor - it's a 2.2HdI was out on Sunday driving along at 50-60mph and the engine just cut out and glided to a halt - no bangs or rattles just cut out the AA man suspected it was cam belt and the local Citroen dealer now also thinks it is cam belt although they not yet stripped anything down yet to confirm I had to sit down but they are quoting £1700 to sort it as there are 16 hours or so labour? I phoned a local independant and they are saying £1500 to sort am I being ripped off? does anyone want the job locally? is it likely to be the cambelt considering there were no bangs and rattles that you would expect your thoughts would be appreciated Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted October 12, 2009 Author Posted October 12, 2009 been reading up on another forum - the valves sit vertical rather than at an angle so maybe no damage to valves and pistons ? the car is a few years out of warrenty but has only done 53k so it is a bit of a p*****r TBH the price of £1700 does not incude parts Quote
scruffythefirst Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Pull the head off yourself and see how bad the damage is? Quote
adamnreeves Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Might be cheaper just to get a 2nd hand engine and swap over. Quote
Nick A Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Mate of mine had the same happen on his C8 55plate with 55000 miles on it, its very common it went to citroen, he shouted very loud citroen payed for a nice new engine all he had to pay was the initial diagnosis, this was about 5 monthes ago Quote
sport 2000 Dan Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 eeerrr i wouldn't bother trying this job yourself unless you know what you are doing, as the head cannot be removed without the injectors being removed which almost always get stuck in the head, for which there is a 2.5 ton hydraulic puller (special tool) and even this quite often doesn't work! Scottish Bloke Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Does it have full dealer service history? When's the belt due to be changed? If it's within the prescribed timescale and has the correct documented history I'd be tempted to speak to Citroen. You may not get the answers your looking for, however my experiences working for another Marque are that you may get a contribution towards the cost of repairs. I'd be very doubtful if you will get any assistance without FSH. Good Luck Quote
pistonbroke Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 £1700 for 16 hours labour Tell me that's a pisstake £93.75 per hour Quote
Guest Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 sounds about right for main dealers inc vat these days .... your average marque specialist will be up near 60 plus vat to make money. Quote
scruffythefirst Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 On the subject of Manufacturers paying for repairs out of warranty, BMW replaced my mums 3 series engine at 112,000 miles for the cost of the fluids after I had a go at them. It had full history, but only independent garages. Quote
stu999 Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 I thought new engines were part of a Beemer service schedule Quote
T.G.G. Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 £1700 for 16 hours labour Tell me that's a pisstake £93.75 per hour I would have said it was £106.25 an hour !!. Quote

Captain Colonial Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 It put me right off Citroen when I found out (and this is true) they made the steering gear for the Titanic - look how well that worked! Quote
