voyager Posted April 2, 2002 Share Posted April 2, 2002 ok i bet this question has been asked a squillion times but........... just picked up kit and am now sourcing bits and i need a diff... am gonna go ford LSD but need to know what cars i have to look at for the correct diff. i am building a BEC so the 3.96 may be a bit lairy and i would prefer the 3.62 or close if this exists. now i know you folk out their will already know what cars these diffs were fitted to but i dont so to narrow my search i need to know what sierra/granada i should look for as well as what vintage. am i right in assuming that the rear discs/calipers are mk/3/4 escort front and sierra rears ? thx guys i know i can rely on your sage advice. deej. Richard Salisbury Posted April 3, 2002 Share Posted April 3, 2002 Sierra 4 x 4 had LSD as standard. 3.62 ratio. Higher spec scorpios had them too, but ratios varied. Richard Salisbury Posted April 3, 2002 Share Posted April 3, 2002 Regarding the brakes: Front calipers are M16, fitted widely to Cortinas, later escorts (Mk2), capris etc. Discs are from the same cars. Rear calipers are from Sierra (not all models had rear discs - 4x4 and some later 2.0 GLSi models mainly), all Scorpio models. I believe some estate Sierras had a 3.36 diff, but you'd need a second LSD from a Granny or XR to swap out the LSD/CWP etc..... If you've "just picked up a kit", was it new from the factory, 'cos I thought BEC kits had mounts to fit a Freelander diff, which is a 3.14 (or something).......... Hopefully, one of the bike engine boys will be along in a mo' with the URL for the Bike Engined Car group on Yahoo, who will have all the answers you need. voyager Posted April 3, 2002 Author Share Posted April 3, 2002 cheers guys, tis true that w*******d chassis has mounts for freelander diff but if you ask nice the will jig it for ford diff, which is what i asked them to do. the freelander diff is £**###. seems they take standard f/l diff and then fit an LSD. how easy is it to fit a ford LSD from say scorpio to a sierra estate diff with a better ratio ? i know that it will require setting up for backlash etc but is it a viable proposition. Blatman Posted April 3, 2002 Share Posted April 3, 2002 Get the diffs re-built by a pro. SPC or Road and Race Transmissions, depending on where in the country you are. And yes, get a Granny/XR4x4 LSD, and fit the crown wheel and pinion from the 3.36 estate diff in to it. That is what I meant in my first posting, but I didn't make it very clear...... You may also be able to flog on a non LSD 3.62/3.92 ('cos that's what you'll have left) to make up for some of the expense. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
peterrosey Posted April 15, 2002 Share Posted April 15, 2002 I'm part-way through building a Megabusa and have just slotted in a Freelander LSD and the only point I'd make is about weight. The Ford type diffs are heavy and similar in size to a small aircraft carrier. Pay the money! Keep the fab power-to-weight of your BEC!
