Cleggy the Spyder Man
made the piece up tonight to fill the hole that Mr Anglegrinder managed to make last night did a tack weld every 2cm or so and then spot weld, let cool and spot again in a constant flow for about 3cm then changed location to avoid distortion - has not distorted at all weld looks crap so will be grinding flat tomorrow to tidy the job up tacked on all welded up ready for a tidy up with the grinder
Cleggy the Spyder Man
another micro update that is barely worth posting - hey but it gives me sumtin to do whilst the missus catches up on her soaps ground of the weld and slapped a bit of zinc 182 to protect for mean time - they were a rock band wernt they the new fan housing has no holes or brackets for the coil or voltage regulator, so have started making up some mountings that will be tacked on - the best way would have been to tack on some captive nuts but access behind is impossible and I really wanted to keep them in there original-ish positions I shall be tacking some studs in place
Cleggy the Spyder Man
tonight's moments of joy in the garage sees the coil bracket fitted - I used some big rivnuts (thanks Deano - good job you reminded me about this tool as this sorta stuff is what it is made for ) also temporary fitted the spark plug leads to check on routing - I noticed tonight that my dizzy has the code 009 so I assume this is the later bosch type? Actually shut the garage doors down for the first time tonight and actually thought to myself that I am actually getting somewhere or am I going to see the kind chap that is making up my new fuel tank tomorrow so did a final - final - final check on my measurements - good job I did as I found that if you bounced up and down on the suspension hard enough the track rod hit the underside of the tank so I have now allowed for that final spec after muchus p********o aboutus ................ Cleggy the Spyder Man
009 is a performance dizzy for VW's gives a better advance curve than standard. lewis so with a performance dizzy and an upgrade to twin carbs I could be perhaps looking at upwards of ....... 50bhp
Cleggy the Spyder Man
went to see the guy today that is making up my fuel tank and had the oppertunity to visit his place of work where they make up complete bodies from alloy the way they used to, often from nothing more than a picture to work from - gob smaked I was talk about kid in a sweet shop and the skills these guys have are amazing to me cars in the workshop today - many millions of pounds worth ferarri california alfa romeo stradale coventry climax engined single seater aston martin db5 (I think) lotus type 9 maserati (think it was a tipo) but it was one of the most stunning cars I have ever seen with huge long bonnet- apart from the A*** end which was butt ugly was also interesting to find out who some of the cars belong too - some very well known names and various other classic exotica plus all the metal working tools you could imagine I was shown all the machinery used including the metal shrinking machines - I have always wonder how they shrunk the metal and now I know english wheels etc I was totally peaved that I forgot my camera to post up the car porn but maybe when I pick the tank up I can take some snaps If anyone wants alloy panels or tanks etc making up by a true professional just let me know and I will forward you Trev's details A day to remember - thanks Trev I really enjoyed being shown around
samcooke
009s are clockwork rather than vac advance, you'll prolly find there isn't a vac take off on your twin carb set up, so 009 is good news. Whilst you've got the engine out, have you thought about some 1.25 rockers? With those carbs you'll get a fair bit more mixture in, only to have it held up by the standard valve openings. 1.25 rocker kits aren't dear and will make it breathe a good deal better. I reckon you might get 70bhp...
Cleggy the Spyder Man
had not thought about that Sam - will investigate though when I get a moment - cheers took advantage today of having a m8 around to lift off the bodywork again - certainly seem to be enjoying anything that involves fabricating and does not involve bodywork I have the battery to locate somewhere and the spare wheel - what do you guys reckon about location for weight distribution? the spare wheel was thinking about in front of the front beem axle for added safety and the battery was going somewhere between the back of the passenger seat and the engine so more weight over the front or try to get more in the middle of the car? your thoughts? pistonbroke
Looks as if most weight is in the rear so maybe front mounted batt would be good but bare in mind the much longer cable run needed (volts drop?) would be better in the center . Whats the arrangement with the pedals ? they look to be one missing and mounted kind of strange like
Cleggy the Spyder Man
the pedals are just flapping in the wind at the moment I have a cable shortening kit on order at the moment so I can do the job right - might be chopping the pedals around a bit but will be sorting brakes/clutch etc before I get the angle gringer out- oh and it's the go pedal that is missing it mounts to the floor but as you can see there's no floor
pistonbroke
Ahhhhh ! looking at pic No3 looks like there fastened to the tunnel on some kind of a clever Duetchy axle Did JD have big feet
Cleggy the Spyder Man
they sleeve each other and the go pedal goes through the centre and connects up to an arm on the other side of the centre tunnel - basic but it sorta works the brake pedal has a pin that connect straight up to the master cylinder - the clutch pedal goes though into the chassis tube and has a little lever arm on it for the cable If it was a money no object job I would have been putting in a pedal box - but hey cannot have everything
Cleggy the Spyder Man
done a bit of cleaning up since my last report - have had to have the spyder outside a few times due to a certain yellow car requiring the garage space with some excursions thought it would be a good idea to get some paint on the new stuff rather than keep cleaning the surface rust off - certainly makes the thing look better - I still intend to have the whole lot sand blasted towards the end of the project also put an extra coat on the top of the fan shroud picked this mini spray gun up at Dubfreeze a few months ago - has to be said it was perfect for chassis work - enabling a narrow spray avoiding excessive overspray - spot on for the frame work - it's a bergen and from memory I paid about 25-30 quid at the show - due to its small size cleaning is also a doddle compared to a full size spray gun and last job done over the week was to clean up one of the seats ready for fibreglass repairing more to follow soon
housebeautician
Cant believe the difference a drop of paint makes seat looks a lot better too since i last saw it. keep at it mate. will sort the garage floor soon.
