Honda Accord Clutch

Recommended Posts

Ok this is not westy related...sorry

anyway, I have an 05 Honda accord tourer 2.2cdti with 60k on it and the clutch has been slipping for a little while now, I have just been quoted £850 by a Honda dealer..

The questions ...

1. I take it there is no form of adjustment if it is slipping?

2. Any idea of what a competitive price is for a replacement clutch for one of these motors?

Thanks in advance

I would anticipate in current recession you would be able to obtain a more competitive quote elsewhere - sounds like your Honda dealer may be making up for low car sales     ............ or possibly not

as a comparison  an Audi clutch (A4) costs me circa £300 supplied and fitted  :suspect:

might be talking out of my harris but I'm sure I recall reading somewhere they have one of thos daft dual mass flywheels like the trannies etc. does the price include the replacement of that as I believe they do fail and they will probably want to replace it. If i'm right the special tool will be to compress the clutch to get it off the fly wheel??

Could be talking utter baloney though

you get the same advice on dual mass flywheel replacement when fitting Audi  clutches normally by the man selling you the clutch  ???  ???  I never bother and havnt had a problem, a wise man told me if you dont have an itch why scratch it  ;)  Ive had one dual mass go on me and on tick over  at there worst they bang like hell sound like a main bearing is letting go  as its metal on metal   :0  :0  :0

fyi . an Audi dual mass is around £180  :t-up:

Andrew Pages are quite cheap for them  :t-up:

Dual mass flywheels do go wrong, but the biggest problem is there was no way of testing them properly until last year, when LUK brought out the tool to test them. Most garages and dealers had no way of testing other than rocking side to side and feeling for play, most still not have the tool now. It has therefore become common practise to replace everything because if you put a new clutch onto a worn (not badly worn) DMF it will soon damage the new clutch, and no one wants to do 8 or so hours labour to then argue who was right who was wrong if it goes wrong.

All the parts are available from the usual motor factors and the tool is around £200 via LUK stockists. As always you need the knowledge of how to use it as well as.

Now you will hear some say to replace with a solid flywheel conversion, (not sure if one is available for the accord) however if you do all the vibration from the engine which the DMF takes out will go straight to your gearbox and knacker it. before doing anything like that ask yourself if any major manufacturer could have saved money and fitted a solid flywheel why didn't they?

If your car has a high mileage but has been motorway miles you will probably not need to replace it, if it has done say 50K of normal commuting then it will probably need changing.

I have just had the clutch slip on  my 23 k 55 plate accord CDTi. I was quoted £1900 for the clutch and flywheel to be replaced on a car with low mileage and 3 yrs and 2 months old. Clutch kit is £250, flywheel £900 and the rest labour. I argued with Honda who weren't interested and said speak to the dealer. There has been issues with clutches failing prematurely because of the cruise control mechanism on the clutch pedal not being set up right and causing the realease bearing to ride the clutch.Mine also had a replacement clutch pedal in september because of a creak (which they knew as the master cylinder, but the w**kers didn't want to chage it) The car went to Honda, I had to authorise the gearbox removal and they found the clutch 'worn out' They replaced the clutch and I had to pay 5 hrs labour, which was £510 !!!!! They then 'hid' the clucth from me,so I couldn't see it, saying that it had already gone back to Honda, on the same day it was fitted, so I don't trust dealers at all.The 'special tools' for the job is crap, all you need is a clutch alignment tool.NEVER TRUST A MAIN DEALER..............if theres no warranty, go to a trusted garage.

Dual mass flywheels are crap.If they do make a 'noticeable difference' then peugot cars with dual mass flywheels, if you order an OE replacement clutch kit from the dealer comes with a flywheel to binthe d/m , as they know how troublesome they are.The CTDi does not have a solid mass flywheel as a replacement, they wouldn't sell enough of them,so not cost efficient.Sadly Honda are supposed to be reliable, but we have had a few problems and will go back to an Audi Diesel when the time comes....................

That makes my quote look good ... thanks all, I will let you know how I get on with the quotes

We've got 54 plate 2.2CDTi Tourer that's done 80k, don't think it's had a clutch or flywheel changed though. Hopefully it'll stay that way at those prices!

You do need a special tool to fit the clutch to a Honda Diesel . The pressure plate has an adjuster built into it which needs compressing , if this is not done the clutch will only last a couple of thousand miles . It is a fairly simple tool which I am sure could be duplicated . :)

As far as I am aware the cruise control switch issue is only on the 06 onward Civic and would be covered by warranty . This can easily be checked regardless .

I have not seen any problems with the flywheels except the usual scouring etc that you get on any flywheel From memory the flywheels are about £700 but would have to check . I do agree that Dual mass flywheels are an expensive pain in the  :arse:

The FRT for a clutch on an Accord Diesel is approx 5.8 hrs but again I would have to double check .

If anyone would like a price for the clutch kit pm me and I will get our parts dept to e-mail you although post may be expensive .
