Potentian Newbie to a Westfield

Ross,

Not saying that it has not got 158bhp, but I would put this figure out of your mind if I was you, it is largely irrelevant. Sure 1 engine did make that on one RR sometime, but we know how these things are, far more relevant is that it pulls cleanly, runs well and delivers the smiles.

158 or even 3000bhp in a westfield has no reference point for you, as it will be sooooooo diferent from the TDI Seat to be unbelievable.

I would however be very keen to check the rest of the spec, as the money spent on a CVH to get to solid lifters and ported Farriday head is quite serious, so would expect a few other reciprical go faster bits....LSD diff for example, decent shocks/breaks/tyres etc. On track these will be miles faster than 10 more bhp or even 10 less than you thought.

If it is fitted with Electric ignition it will be better than some at starting on a cold day.

You can use it as a daily drive, and yes teh weather is a potential issue. If teh car has a roof using a one piece plastic rail to fit on teh screen it will be a lot better than teh old press on studs. A tounauxe cover would be a clever purchase (if not fitted) as well.

Doors do tend to let in rain, as it comes off the front wheels, hits the rear arch and splashesup the gap between door and body at the bottom, soaking your arm. Some people modify the doors, push rags into the gap or ware motorcycle weatherproofs.....take your pick.

what I would say though is that they are not the easiest to drive everyday....You are in a small low car, very easily overlooked and with the weather gear up, your visability is seriously reduced as well. Also the headlights are more candels in jars, you might want to look into better bulbs if you are drive it every day.

I would say if it has not been driven for a while/used, then budget for a new set of HT leads, plugs, oil and oil filter, service it and check all the beraks for siezed/leaking calipers. I would also take a good look at the tyres to make sure they are not damaged, as standing still for a long time does cause issues/cracks and makes them square.

When driving it, test all the electrics, on an older car this will be the cause for most of your niggles.

I drove mine when i was 20something every day, it was fantastic and i still own one today.

Thanks for your advice. It turns out that it's not getting taxed until next month or maybe even the month after so I've got plenty of time to ponder. I'll post back up when I've driven it and what I'll be doing. Thanks again everyone for your advice. All taken on board.

Hi All.........again,

I have another question.  I've been thinking about the "get a 2nd car idea" and do think it is a good idea.  The problem I have is paying for insurance, currently paying £1k on 3rd party F+F on group 9 but if I got a group 1 car for cheap it may be possible.  Just wandering if insurance companies do a specialist policy where you have 2 cars and it won't cost much more.  So I wouldn't be paying 2 full amounts if that makes sense?

Thanks all

Yep that is right.

In fact most Kit Car Insurance companies expect it to be a second car and you can have limited mileage for example to keep the Westie insurance cheeper.

Shop around and see what you get quoted  :t-up:

Im 20 i cant get a insurance comp to give me a quote even with my old man on the insurance too.

im not sure if its because i have a 2lt zetec tho.

whos your insurance with?

Im with Sureterm, with a policy from Highway, plus breakdown cover.

- I think being 21 rather than 20 might be half the issue, but im sure there are people who have insured sevens at 20. 25 is of the next big step.

As said. Shop around on that one.

My tintop is with another company and i would have been cheaper if that had been in with the westfeild thro sureterm.

I would also suggest if you are a club member to give Footman James a call with your membership number, as the discounts might be worth while.

When you say a club member do you mean part of this website?

I'll get a few quotes when I've got some spare time over the weekend.  Will need to find a cheap run-about to drive.  In fact, the man who is selling the Westy has just bought a new Toyota Avensis but still has his old Pug 406 1.9D.  I checked the insurance group and it's 9, same as my beeza suprisingly so not sure if that would be a wise choice.  I could do with a car in the insurance group region of 1-4 perhaps to.  I don't want to pay more than I'm paying now on my car basically.  Cheers for your help again.

Mark means join the Westfield Sports Car Club. You need to quote your membership number to get a discount.

Sureterm wanted a copy of the frontpage of the membership papers, which has the club letterhead and my membership number on it.

- Got me a 10% discount (about £50) which makes joining worth it, espcically as i was planning ot anyway.
