pistonbroke Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 {Flame suit on} Ok, lots of talk about how poor standard bars are but is this just people's point of view or is there some facts about it? I don't want to upset anyone about bad accidents which might have happened to friends but has anyone actually flattened a standard bar? {Flame suit unzipped but still to hand!} yes According to the theory you are now a Torso Quote
tex Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Is there anyone out there that offers a bolt on 'full cage' as an addition to the RAC bar and if so would that be MSA compiant? yea - the caged one - you have to bin the rac one tho bolts straight in with just 2 holes to drill Quote
nikpro Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 I take it you've fitted a full cage in your daily driver as well then? (It offers b****r all protection when hitting an animal as well!) i would if i could - i use rented cars as daily drivers - they cannot be modified unfortunately.. you sound like it will never happen nik - i used to be so sure - until it did happen normal run around cars would of survived a lot better than a se7en type car in the situation i had - the deer would of hit bumper - broken hit - bounced off - been dead of course if you were going fast theres nowt will save you - i have pictures of a deer sucked into a bmw engine bay at over a ton - the whole thing was wrapped around the block basically - the slope of a screen *may* offer some protection against smaller animals but not against summink like a cow or horse - nowt would stop that sort of thing the basic chassis seemed to survive quite well but the sticky out bits did their job absorbing the impact quite well - well enuff for us to walk away with not even a bruise after flipping over twice off a 50ft embankment to be honest i'm suprised that manufacturers of kits are allowed to make the decorative roll bars - i know the law allows it but its time the law was changed in my opinion... they are crap Motorbikes are a bit f****d then; they don't even offer cosmetic protection! tex Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 nope - i was talking to a chap on the insurance call center - he had a guy the week before who hit a deer at over 120mph - went right through the middle of it... Quote
Tim Reid Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Ok, but it sounds like one picture of one car. I have seen a picture of a westfield in two bits and an Audi A3 in two but this doesn't make me want to strengthen the side of any of my cars. I guess what I am looking for is something which cannot be easily answered, out of X number of cars rolled how many flatten the standard bar? Also consider, it takes a fair bit to turn a westie over you need to hit a curb sideways or dig into soft ground. Quote
tex Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 out of X number of cars rolled how many flatten the standard bar? any that land on the roof / sorry head will flatten - no worries about that - even the makers say it will, common sense says it will and the ones that have show it will - there is nothing to stop it at all just your head.. or maybe your wifes too.. sorry to bang on about it but i really thnk people just dont see how dangerous it is. how many time i have heard people going on about old F1 cars with no roll bars etc - whats the difference? remember - iv been there - seen it first hand Quote

speedy jon Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 hey i even compete in motorsport with no belts no rollbar and a fuel tank between my legs. iv seen a kart roll and it wasnt nice. i can remember seeing it happen in slow motion as the karts past me after giving them the green light. guy was fine. roll i know the vid happened while racing but it does show how easy it can be to roll a 7 type car. Dave Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 If that video does not convince everybody to at least fit an RAC bar then nothing will Dave Quote
markcoopers Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 Tim reid, I don't think that anyone will have those facts, nor least be silly enought to publicly disclose without haveing dam fine lawers. I have a cage on a road car, as i do the odd track day and did have a moment, even though i had an RAC bar. I don't think i would get into a STD bar'ed car if on a track, but would happily do so on the road as I assume that the driver is driving below the limits and would slow if asked. The STD bar has often been an area for debate and it is very hard to make a case for it. Clearly it is legal and meets a set of criteria, so we can not simply poo poo it, but it certainly isn't something i can recomend in any way or form. To be honest the last nail for the STD bar surely should be the fact that a solution in the form of an RAC bar exists and fits.....No piorneering. All the neigh says on the grounds of cost probably pay more for a pair of jeans or shoes or on wasted suposedly upgraded brakes, or some similar. It is just an issue of priorities in my book. Your car does look very good, so i do understand the cosmetic argument, but skidding sideways from a roundabout and hitting a curb sideways......well you will not be the first...nor the last. I think tat was suitably "on the fence", but if pushed...get an RAC it makes sence. Quote

One car Too many though Also *If* your refering to the Orange & Black Westy that was in 2 pieces That was chopped up by the firebrigade so they could get the Lad out The Standard Bar is for pushing the car back into the Garage imho We can only offer advice At the end of the day though it's your head and Your decision Quote
