As a police officer once recommended to me in this situation........ look for the biggest of the group and drop him first as it's a good chance the others will back down if they think you are madder than them  

that could go either way though

the biggest might not be the toughest, then all the others will want revenge, then again, maybe he is the toughest, and your punch does nothing to him  

You never know with this sort of thing. personally I'd try and get away from them somehow, but if I need to hit a few to do that then fairenough, just try not to get hit by the rest of them I suppose. Float like a butterfly sting like a bee, run like a greyhound lol
