karts

would be interested in an explanation of the 3 wheeld cornering technique and how it helps you to corner quicker , noticed a couple with the front wheel in the air but not the rear, with all the weight on the right hand side reckon I would need a ramp to get it elevated on mine    ???   :suspect:  :suspect:  :durr:

Jeff,

I think the basic principle is that due to the axle being solid not like a car with a differential. When cornering in a car the differential allows for the diffrent wheels speed as the inner wheel has less distance to travel than te outer. In a kart it is the same the inner wheels needs to rotate slower than the outer however this is not possible with a solid axale and thus bogs the kart down. There if the karts lifts its inside wheel it can rotate the same speed as the outer and not bog the kart down.

Ross

Spot on Ross.

But also, by lifting the inside rear wheel not only keeps the RPM up it stops the rear axle driving the kart off in a straight line, thus reduces understeer significantly.

Jeff, ignore the ones that are lifting their inside front   Thats going a bit too far and are obviously doing something wrong   :p  ;)

Conibear,

How do you know when driving the kart if you are lifting the inside wheel? :durr:

Ross

err thats the job of your race engineer ....

basically you need to understand what the caster does etc what stiffening side pod bars bumpers etc do , and the various adjustable bars the chassis has .

Also front and rear track width adjustment ride heights increasing the ackerman angle before starting to think about body weight etc

oh and tyre pressures which we vary anything from 8psi to 20 depending on track temps etc etc .

setting up a kart chassis correctly is a very very black art and when they are right its awsome and the stopwatch shows it .

buy one of the books to get a basic understanding or download the arrow karts owners manual , that will give you an understanding of how chassis behave relative to what changes to make

Oh and jeff most karts run possitive camber on the front .... belive it or not .

think we had 2mm positive last weekend

Thanks for that. However i dont have a race engineer  . Why i ask is that reading a few post on forums many people say learn how to drive the kart before playing with the setup therefore under this guidance how do you know when you are driving the kart to its best on the setup you are running?

After a few issues common to 2 strokes at the weekend decided to get shot and but a 4 stroke for my youngest boy,its bad enough fiddling with my own between sessions without keeping on top of a tempremental 2 stroke    :arse: and seeing Ben blow 2 of his up has put me off

a bit of reseach shows the Honda cadet gx160s are the way forward for the kids holding lap records at a lot of circuits ,  looked at a few on ebay and they are selling for b****y fortunes and didnt want to spend £1000 for something decent      the bairns kart has a good "ARC" chassis so decided to convert it, dont think its ever going to be raced and I want some reliable fun for him so  set about this morning to convert it removed the 2 stroke W60 from the kart, removed the motor from bobs kart and offered it up, looked b****y tight but do-able  :suspect:

modified the comer mounts cut and redrilled and got it to fit, had to strip the rear axel to swap the rear sproket to the inside as comers are on the outside.

Image005-1.jpg

the rear diagnal chassis brace was in the way for the sprocket so I cut pulled forward and rewelded it back on, side pod had to be trimmed back , the seat has to be moved slightly to miss the clutch and seat stay cut away , a universal seat stay bought along with a longer throttle cable and fannys your granny all done and dusted ready for Sunday, reckon it will fly but more so be much more reliable and no fiddling on all the time  :bangshead:  :D

using Bobs engine for Sunday but will buy a brand new one this week at £160 thats cheap running, reckon the W60 will do circa £300 so into pocket too  :xmas:  :xmas:
