karts

sorry was busy last night so didn't answer .... btw amazed at the weight of your  kart being so low as a tonykart with lots of magnisium on it weighs in at around 80kgs in rotax max trim and i always thought 80 odd kgs was right , i would expect a 4stroke engine to be heavier.

ok hands on the wheel ...... you may have discovered no springs or damper on your kart .... so !! all the suspention work is done buy the twisting forces of the chassis , in the summer on fresh rubber a kart chassis through a long corner will wind itsself up like a spring and then release energy as it straightens up in massive grip situations this will lift the unweighted 2 wheels in a dramatic fashion. Obviously this is bad so we adjust chassis stifness with the various bars in the chassis , length of hubs  bumper tension adding extra seat stays etc etc .

This looses to much grip , also there are ride hieghts which make huge differences and then the more usual caster and camber .

The holding the wheel bit comes from actually realising how much your body weight affects the chassis (obviously) and if you watch you will see the guys holding the wheel low and when they turn in they don't just turn but will push on the wheel to physically push the front end into the tarmac to gain front end bite.

Ther is something alot of racers have which is a more angled steering boss which enables you to not have to place your hands quite so low to get the effect (or get more effect if you do.)

Again as i said to pete earlier in the thread ,all this is why there is an optimum seat position which is critical , and as much as a 10mm move of a seat has a huge effect.

As for lap times , don't forget they will be with an optimum setup , fresh rubber (forget times on tyres over 90 laps old) and with a huge amount of practice .

You need to be sooth and understand you weight and how it changes a chassis , you'll get there and if right now your 2 seconds off then that aint bad .... 3 or 4 starting out still isn't a crime , but its a whole different driving style to getting a 7 round a track quick

and thats where alot get frustrated .....

Harv this guy doesn't agree with you about where to hold the wheel ???

Harv, I kinda thought that to be honest as I've lifted a 70 kg person up before, and this kart feels a lot heavier than that! But Mark did reckon his kart was lighter than mine, I didn't notice as I'm a weed and they both felt heavy! :D

That probably means 74 kg's is about right for ours then as I would expect a pro-kart to be a bit heavier.

Jeff, why not measure it dry and fueled up?

[EDIT] Well done Bob, I think he's gonna be giving us all lessons when we all get weighed down. :D

well that explains why I was off the pace then

looks easy when reading but think in practice that aint gonna come overnight !  how the f**k is turn 3 flat out !!! theres not a hope in hell my kart would have gone round there flat and everyone I chased was doing the same as me , when I tried it at pace I hit a series of small concrete speed bumps on the left that just about  knocked me A*** up me back  :0  :0 so that mush must have a big pair of cahooters or some sticky tyres  :D  :D  :D

the perfect lap of Warden law

well I have to say I only got 2 corners on the track correct  :bangshead:  :bangshead:

at least I know I can go a lot quicker now tho :)

and after reading up on how to drive a kart, I can't wait to get back in the saddle and try some new techniques

Were gonna hopefully mount the camera to ours for next time, will look funny I reckon!

Turn 3 I can see being flat if your absolutly "on it", dont think I quite managed fully flat though, possibly in marks kart as it held the tight line flat out on the 1st corner better than mine. Will try 18psi in my tyre's next I reckon.
