JeffC Posted September 5, 2008 Author Posted September 5, 2008 QUOTE Not all the USB to RS232 converters actually work as you may think, and even if they do, be prepared for some com port fun, which you'll no doubt be on to us about They're both cheap enough for a punt though... right got one of these converter things , downloaded the omex software (or Pete did as I couldnt manage it ) when connect it to the omex it says the ecu is offline , even when we know it isnt... any thoughts or is blatters correct in his above statement Quote
Blatman Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Check what COM port the USB is looking at. It may be working but it's looking at COM 4 or above, which are all virtual ports usually. Only COM ports 1, 2 and 3 usually relate to an actual socket on the computer. You can change the COM port settings so that the USB is looking at COM 1, 2 or 3, and try it then. If it still doesn't work, you could well have one of the USB converters that doesn't work. I'll see if I can find the click routine for you... BUT, I though you bought a lap top with an RS232 on board? Quote
Blatman Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Right... after a quick look... With the ECU plaugged in and powered up and the cable attached to the PC and the ECU... Right click My Computer. NOT the shortcut, but in the start menu. Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager. Click the + next to Ports (COM & LPT) Hopefully, you'll see a random USB controller, or maybe even the ECU or USB is named as a COM port. Right click the port. Click the Port Settings tab. Click Advanced. If I'm right, there's a COM Port list on a drop down at the bottom of the box. Select a COM Port that *isn't* in use between 1 and 3, and save and close. Then try the ECU again. You may have to power the ECU off and on again. *Don't* turn the PC off as it may lose the COM Port settings becuase USB is plug 'n' play and it may default back to a random port number. If the machine is connected to the internet, I may be able to help if you can get me your IP address... on second thoughts, maybe not... If you'd bought a machine with an RS232 port on it like I told you, we wouldn't be here, but you never listen Quote
Pilot Pete Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 If you'd bought a machine with an RS232 port on it like I told you, we wouldn't be here, but you never listen He wanted to buy one with an RS232 port but understeered wide and missed it! danmo Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 this makes for some funny reading Hope it works for you in the end - but I'm sure that for the price you've paid, messing about, you could have bought a decent laptop with the port already on - like either the one me or blatman suggested Dan Quote

JeffC Posted September 6, 2008 Author Posted September 6, 2008 a little bit of knowledge is dangerous not keen on the first lead/adapter I bought think at 99p i should have known better will get this other one and try that as for the understeer I have gained quite a bit of knowledge over the last 4 years on this subject through trial and error, reading and talking to peoeple and pretty sure I can rid myself of that like as ever every day is a learning day Quote
Pilot Pete Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 as for the understeer I have gained quite a bit of knowledge over the last 4 years on this subject through trial and error, reading and talking to peoeple and pretty sure I can rid myself of that like as ever every day is a learning day Yep, you've spend 4 years perfecting the art of setting up a westfield, so you buy a caterham! Blatman Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 If you're still learning how to rid yourself of understeer after four years, I'd say there was more error than trial going on Got that computer working yet? Quote
