4Gigs in Windows and one and a quarter in Program files is lots and lots. Just what have you got installed in there? Even XP Pro is still supplied on a CD, making it's entire quantity less than 650meg, which is just over half a gig. In other words, I tend to agree with Sparky that you or maybe a programme running in the background is filling your Windows and Programme folders full of lots of stuff that you may not need. FWIW, my Windows folder on this PC, which is 4 years old, is currently running at 2.5Gg, and I don't really take that much care, although I don't download and install stuff any old how.

In the mean time in IE, check how big your temp files folder is by going to Tools > Internet Options. In the box that opens, one of the headings will be for "Temporary Internet Files". Click "Settings" and tell us how much space is reserved by reading off from the little box next to the slider. Mine is set at 1mb. I believe in IE7 the minimum setting is 8mb. I've never found the need to have that set higher than it's minimum setting.

Do the same in Firefox and report back.

It's not unknown, on laptops, for a backup of the windows install files to be kept on the hard drive instead of giving you an original cd. Could this be hidden in the Windows directory?

They wouldn't be any larger that the original 650Mb instal discs though as the back up uses (I think) a type of "image" of the system to perform the restoration, and avoids disturbing or corrupting non system files and folders, like the My Documents folder. Effectively, system restores ignore these folders. All they have to do is make sure Windows can read them once the system has been restored ;)
