a4gom Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 I have a similar but different problem so while we are on the topic any advice would be good. My laptop only has a 20gb hard drive, for some reason its split in half, windows is on the c drive and is always complaining its full or running low on power. I've looked at the c drive and windows is using 4.1gb of the space, can I delete any of the files in windows there are a couple of directories which look a bit overweight, Size (MB) Folder 1338.25 Installer 1027.53 SoftwareDistribution 863.87 system32 410.52 ServicePackFiles 175.04 ie7updates I know the system32 one is pretty important but what about the first two? I looks to me like Installer and software distribution are to do with microsoft updates, unless someone else can instruct you further I would leave them alone for now. What you should do to help with hardrive space is install everything onto the other partition. Quote
a4gom Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 I've been installing everything on D recently and I've looked through the programmes on C to move stuff but TBF windows and office take up all the room. I'm sure the directories i referred to are the updates question is can I delete the older ones or will it still refer to them? Quote
Blatman Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 QUOTE My laptop only has a 20gb hard drive, for some reason its split in half, windows is on the c drive and is always complaining its full or running low on power Detail is important... Is it saying the C drive s full? How big is the C partition, and how much data is actually on it? Is the lap top battery complaining or is it the CMOS battery? When the errors occur, what EXACTLY do the error messages say? Quote
a4gom Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 QUOTE Is it saying the C drive s full? How big is the C partition, and how much data is actually on it? Well it's supposed to have a 20gb hard drive, i'm pretty sure it did but it says C: = 8.84gb D: = 9.75. Can this change, i'm sure it was more like 9.75 each before? At the moment I have 856mb free on C:. QUOTE Is the lap top battery complaining or is it the CMOS battery? Didn't realise either was? QUOTE When the errors occur, what EXACTLY do the error messages say? Will post up next time it says but its something about windows needing 200mb to run, do you want to delete etc etc.. Quote
Blatman Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 OK... you need to free up some space on the C drive by moving some of the folders from there to the D partition. So things like pictures or videos that take up lots of room could do with beiing moved. This would be a good time (if you haven't already) to do some house keeping and make up some logical folder names and have a tidy up. Also, you may consider a bigger hard drive. 20Gb is pretty small these days... Lap top battery is the main power supply that's re-charged when you plug it in. The CMOS battery is a watch battery slotted in to the motherborad that keeps the clock circuit energised so that it displays the right time and date. They sometimes run out... The error message about needing 200mb to run sounds like the C drive is close to running out of space and it's a warning not to add any more files to the same drive. BUT like I say, detail is important and it'd be handy to "see" what exactly is going on... Quote
danmo Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 when you try uploading stuff, how much vodka have you had first? sorry could have probably been more helpful than that lol Dan Quote
a4gom Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Cheers blatman, I have already transferred my "my documents" contents to D but there is still stuff in there in the local settings and applications data, I already install any new stuff on D. At the mo I have a bit of breathing space but I know it will fill itself back up, it always does! I use ccleaner regularly and use firefox which I have set up to delete everything when I shut down. This is my C drive, there is 8.84gb and currently I'm using 6.8 so have a bit of room now. Size (MB) Folder 4200.6 WINDOWS 1254.81 Program Files 850.4 Documents and Settings 436.6 I386 214.83 System Volume Information Quote
SparkyB Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 4 gigs in the windows folder sounds a little excessive! The office PC I'm on now has about 2.5 in that folder, sounds like you may have a lot of temporary files etc sitting in there. Quote
danmo Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 If your hard drive is getting full that can slow down the computer quite a lot - maybe get an external drive and copy quite a bit of stuff onto there. Also do regular defrags, cos when you install or savce something - windows says to the drive "i need to save this file" so the drive puts it in the nearest place to where the drive is that has enough room (as it will be spinning, to do other processes) so the install will be saved all over the place - this clears that up so all stuff to do with each program is in the same area instead of all over the place. Hope that makes sense Dan. Quote
