danmo Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I would exit messenger when not using not have nokia thing running, unless using it exit the quicktime too. Also not the java, it can slow you down quite a bit. Also what about tool bars, and things like goodle earth, tom tom (as mentioned in earlier post i think) and look for stuff that is running and doesn't need to be. Go to task manager (right click on desktop - just incase you didn't know) and see how many processes are running. should be around 35 - 40 ish (depending on whats running). Dan Quote
SparkyB Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I would try uninstalling AVG and download the new version, I had issues with a version that had updated over several months actually causing a lot of slowdown, reinstalled with latest version and it was far smoother. Quote
langy Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Make sure you are getting 240v out of the socket it's plugged in to. If it's lower, then it will have a knock on effect for the PC HTH Quote
Stevo Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Get it on BTL's forklift, run it at full speed and use a screwdriver to test for any dodgy vibrations. Quote
Bean Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Try installing FireFox web browser, I find it faster than IE in most cases. Quote
moomin Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I would try uninstalling AVG and download the new version AVG v8 is something of a disappointment, it is quite bloated, and has certainly been causing some memory issues on my laptop. I'm on the verge of ditching it for something thinner. It might be worth temporarily switching it, or bits of it, off to see if that improves the performance, i.e. the LinkScanner, SafeSearch, SafeSurf. moomin Quote
peterg Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 How much memory is installed and how much is free? What size harddisk is installed and how much is free? Reboot the PC and get it into safe mode (hit F8) and then examine what processes are running and check the setup options for system performance... Quote
Blatman Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Bottom left is all shortcuts and make no difference to machine speeds. Bottom right (the System Tray) by the clock is what's running. How many in there? Have you had the recent Adobe Flash Player download/upgrade? There are installation issues with it meaning that if your machine is set to download/update automatically, it'll be that that's farked. If the machine is hanging on things like Youtube or any other site with a Flash Player advert/banner or other Flash content, it's probably that. Spent several hours fixing that myself last week Quote

ACW Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 goto to start -> Run. Type in Regedit to run up the registry editor. Its like a tree view. Navigate to Hkey_Local_machine and open branch Navigate to Software and open branch Navigate to Microsoft and open branch Navigate to Windows and open branch Navigate to Current Version and open branch Navigate to Run Tell us the Data values of the Keys in this location. These are all things that startup with windows. Most Viruses and Trojans will use to re-spawn themselves. Lots of thing sin here will be genuine. Dont change anything or you will be in stook. Also in IE. Goto Tools->Manage addins. tell us what you have enabled. Or just try disabling ones one by one. Quote
Blatman Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 How much memory is installed and how much is free? What size harddisk is installed and how much is free? absolutly no idea In XP (Category view...) Start > Control Panel > Performance & Maintainence > System That'll give you the specs of the machine on the General tab. Top half will be operating system info, bottom half will be computer manufacturer or Motherborad manufacturer, and it'll display processor speed and RAM size. IMHO, Firefox may mask the problem, but it's massively resource hungry if you install it and then don't configure it properly. Knowing Jeff and computers, he wouldn't be able to configure it properly so it woud be no better... Quote
Blatman Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 Evenin' Wotbox... Not sure Jeff should be anywhere near the registry, given his lack of technical expertise Could we network his machine with mine using XP's remote help function? If so, I'd be happy to see if I could diagnose Jeffs troubles from here... Quote
ACW Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 probably if you both had MSN. you could share a session with him. Quote
