Buzz Billsberry Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Even in my hooligan days with Leeds United fighting on the terraces it was generally a dame good punch up, only occasionally a knife would show yes ok we used to fight with broken bottles and hatches occasionally but that was never on the terraces. And I suspect the middle aged people on the A35 forum back then called you a bunch on ignorant b******s for fighting causing damage, etc. They probably did Karl but if you read it correctly we did have respect or should I say I did and others and we never used knives but I really enjoyed the fighting tho'+ I was only 17! brianm Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 The problem is with parenting as I see it. Todays delinquents are the spawn of the last generation of delinquents and they were bad enough. What hope for this lot or Joe Bloggs if he happens accross them on a bad day. It is so easy to fing yourself in a situation if you are of the mind to stand up for yourself or your rights against some of todays generation on a typical evening blot out. As said Buzz the things we did back in the 60's as kids would raise headlines today, but it was innocent mischieve if that makes sense? Personally at the age of 11 I had access to a shotgun, I put crossbow bolts into the side of artics on the MI, (by accident), we used to poach ducks of the local National Trust property early mornings etc etc. I can't recall the number of times I got slapped by one of the local game keepers. We used to shoot at each other with No 3 garden shotguns, and I came dam near to being killed, and came dam near to killing a mate with a long bow in my teenage years. The point is that there was no intent to do harm at this time, and by the time we were in our late teens/twenties we had enough respect for each other to rely on knuckles not weapons to sort things out. I am now of course a perfectly well rounded member of society, not. Senile? me? I've not stopped being juvenile yet!! Quote
Blatman Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 QUOTE As said Buzz the things we did back in the 60's as kids would raise headlines today, but it was innocent mischieve if that makes sense? That's the point. It doesn't make sense. Violence, as with anything else, evolves. Justify shooting artics with crossbows and dicking around with shotguns, and you tacitly approve of knives and guns today because you had guns and crossbows in your youth. Maturity, and the chance to learn by your mistakes is a luxury *NO* teenager has, same as you. Don't confuse experience with common sense because you can't readily pass on either, no matter how much you try... Quote

Well , I'm not one to preach, but in it's day, I do seem to recall that this kind of behavior was indeed the scourge of our nation . A shamefull state of affairs that some even took abroad to show how great our country was Reading between the lines .... We had respect for people and property where we lived , but anyone else would get their heads kicked in . Does violence not breed violence. Quote
iiyama Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 Total change of subject, but thats unmistakably a T'Cat! Nice bike! Had one untill last year. Back to topic! Quote
brianm Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 To answer the critics of my misspent youth, what puts it into context is the fact that this wasn't in Central London or Greater Manchester, but out in the sticks where all kids of my age grew up in a rural background, country bumkins if you like. If I'm not mistaken a "lad" of 11 can still legally use a shotgun under supervision today. I didn't go on to become a delinquent, well not in that sense anyway, and legally held both shotgun certificates and a firearms certificates for many years when I legally could. I have yet to shoot or stab anyone. The kids from my generation that didn't make it through with the rest of us, and there were several, were killed on the roads not stabbed, and we all still drive don't we. I know which genaration I think was the safest. I'll say it again, it's all about intent and todays fringe generation will use that against each other. Quote
Norman Verona Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 Brian, I do agrre with you and others that SOME of the kids today lack discipline. It's a small minority but when do the media publish news about the kids that get good grades, are polite, well brougt up and are making something of themselves. However, whilst, to any clear minded person, the fault may lie in bad parenting the reasons for this are very complex. It's probably always been this way and the kids of my youth who "went wrong" have probably been in and out of prison all their adult lives. What makes todays behaviour so dangerous is the lack of self esteem and, therefore, the lack of respect for others. (should keep this going for a while) Quote
