JeffC Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 nothing new here though as a kid I always carried a knife, cut apples with it made arrows for me bow , cut tatties and cooked them on a fire outside and carved me name on trees, but have to say it would have never crossed my mind to stick it into another person . My parents are a lot older and were quite laid back, but Times have changed I wouldnt let my kids have a knife, this is prob me being an over protective father but I cant see why they would ever need one they dont do the things I did as kids (thank god) . do you let kids have a knife Quote
Asterix Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I don't think the weapon is the issue Jeff. The problem is the wilful disregard for the sanctity of life, a society that has skewed itself too far towards the rights of the perpetrator and a much more immediate mass-media mechanism. Quote
Norman Verona Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 QUOTE I wouldnt let my kids have a knife I would hazard a guess that most parents say that. But can you stop them when the peer pressure is so great? Quote
originalgeezer Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 The majority carry one through fear, to try to protect themselves by doing the same ont he theroy, that the next kid in the next group has one and so it escalates on and on. Knifes are also very accesible to anyone, child or adult. Quote
spence Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 There's no punishment these days. Kids can do what they like, when they like and how they like without any come back for a start. Respecting any authority, to some, must be some sort of joke. Like Jeff said i always had a pen knife, which my parents bought me . The thought of using it on anybody wouldn't even have entered my head. Quote
JeffC Posted July 2, 2008 Author Posted July 2, 2008 I think the family of that poor kid stabbed this week will be trying to change the law, kids have no reason to carry knives though now , not as if they will need one for a wii or x box is it imho there should be consequences anyone found carrying one i agree with Spence Most of the problems I think stem from lack of discipline at home and school,if kids were kept in line from an early age it would never come to this. kids these days seem to get fartoo much slack, I remember getting a proper good whack with the cane and size 11 sandshoe at junior school for misbehaving only ever got it once I think getting rid of punishment at school was the beggining of all this. feel old now Quote
Norman Verona Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 QUOTE only ever got it once Same here - once a week! I do know right from wrong but still do not respect authority just because it's authority. Why do we call it "common sense" when it's so rare. Quote
david.c Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 As Jeff say's I always had a penknife on me as a kid, from about 10 years old upwards. Used to sharpen the hell out of them so that they could cut through whatever I needed them to. But as others had said, never another human being I do however think that the media are hyping it up as to the amount of knives being carried. Otherwise we would be looking at hundreds of stabbings a year, not the current level (not that that is acceptable) David Quote
Buzz Billsberry Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Youth. MOST of them are ignorant b*****ds. No respect for anything, don’t want to work, everything is given to them on a plate if not the steal it, they spend thier time sat in front of a TV playing console games. I hate MOST of them. Carrying a knife well what does that say about you. I never did because I can fight, and spent most of my youth doing it, I grew up in a tuff working class area if you didn't defend yourself then you'd be bulled. Knives were there even then but not as prolific as today. Even in my hooligan days with Leeds United fighting on the terraces it was generally a dame good punch up, only occasionally a knife would show yes ok we used to fight with broken bottles and hatches occasionally but that was never on the terraces. Even though the area I grew up in was hard we always respected, people’s property, the elders and even the rozzers! And that’s what’s missing how we get it back is just beyond me… Now I know some of you will say its always been like that, well has it chuff, most generations showed respect for people, property and had a modicum of manors, I blame the media and some of the parents. I lot of the attitudes reflect that bunch of swamp dwellers over the pond. Their films, their music, their life styles just breed contempt, neuc Hollywood and the gangster rap boys and we just might see a difference. The Yanks have poisoned our language, our TV, our society and generally its down to the media and Hollywood. Apologies, I went off on one there but I love Bighty but it’s been socially demoralised and we haven't even hit rock bottom yet. I wouldn't have a clue how to resolve the issues with knives and violence as its too ingrained in society now & I'm not suggesting hit ‘fire with fire’, but some of the ideas the government want to try are a joke. They want to listen to the community leaders where it’s all happening. I feel there’s one thing for sure, it’s hear to stay and it will get much worse. Wait until the gun culture is fully developed in the UK in the next 10 years. I’ve got to admit I’m concerned about getting into my 70’s ok it’s a way off yet but the future for old farts certainly isn’t orange that’s for sure, that is of coarse if I’m still living in the GB or if I’m still alive come to think of it…. Just my thoughts Buzz Quote
cast iron Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Its the nanny state which has bitten itself in the A***! Once a copper or a teacher was no longer allowed to clip a young un round the lug for cheek or misbehaviour, the youth realise that they were untouchable. By protecting them it has created a far worse problem IMHO Quote
Norman Verona Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 A friend of mine, an ex Sergeant in the Police, tried to get a youth club going in the tough area of Sheffield. He failed because the Sheffield City Council wouldn't cooperate on H&S grounds. So, now the kids roam around the street with nothing to do but create havoc. In fact does anyone here know of a youth club near them? Quote

And I suspect the middle aged people on the A35 forum back then called you a bunch on ignorant b******s for fighting causing damage, etc. Quote

By protecting them it has created a far worse problem IMHO Agreed! As a not so distant school leaver myself I've got to say the lack of disiplin in certain schools is frightening. Although I agree we should bring back punishment in schools, my secondry school proved that you can enforce good disciplin without it. It was entirely down to the teachers. You could have a good craic with them but if you stepped out of line they really gave you an earfull! The next school I went to had a majority of "wet blankets" running the show who were almost afraid to even raise their voice. Suprise suprise, no disiplin at all! What about national service? should that be brought back? Quote
peterg Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 QUOTE Suprise suprise, no disiplin at all! and clearly no spelling classes either Quote
