carpetstu Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 I was witness first hand to the poll tax riots, and although I don't agree that violence should be used, it has to be said that the government did take note. That said, we now pay as much in rates as we would have on an individual taxation...... we lose again! Quote
spence Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 What I want to know is where have all the lorry drivers and farmers gone? Priced off the road and gone out of business i suspect. That's why all i ever seem to see is a s**t load of foreign drivers causing absolute chaos on our roads. Don''t think a day goes by now when i either see another accident or fresh skid marks across a motorway. Quote
bigdinners Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 JUST GOT BACK FROM THE STATES AND FILLED THE RENTAL CAR BEFORE I RETURNED IT. $3.75 PER GALLON, THAT'S ABOUT £1.92 PER GALLON OR £0.43p PER LITRE. I KNOW WE PAY MORE TAX BUT THE DIFFERENCE IS RIDICULOUS ! Quote
Major Stare Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 When is the next fuel depot blockade Wasnt the last one about 7/8 years ago? The country came to a stand still. We need to stop putting up with being ripped off and make a stand ! Quote
samcooke Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 I was thinking this last week. The transport industry kicked off when it was 90p a litre but don't seem to care now it's nearly £1.20. It must cost the best part of £1 per mile for a big HGV nowadays. Calling Liam... Quote

We need to stop putting up with being ripped off and make a stand ! You can't anymore, it falls nicely within the new anti terror laws. How convienent... And we all know how much use the on line petitions do... We *need* to come up with something, and soon. Quote
dabar Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Sam, As you know,I drive a truck and the fuel is killing us.We are only a small company (5 trucks) and our fuel costs according to my employer spread over the fleet as of last week equated to 56% of the trucks earnings, when you add all the other expenses, wages,ni,servicing etc etc there is not much if any left for profit, another six months of increases and i think my employer will be forced to call it a day Some costs, To buy my 6x4 unit + walking floor trailer 110k 6.4 mpg 230-250 litres of fuel a day typical earnings of my truck per week 2.5k. Competition is fierce and the small increases in the rates for the jobs we do have not covered the increasing fuel prices, there is always someone who will do it for less by cutting corners, usually maintenance.Foreign trucks coming into this country to work all week with cheap fuel should be stopped at the ports and charged a levie. The last blockades only halted fuel price increases for a short time, the answer is not to blockade but to just park them up in the yard for a week and watch the country grind to a halt when the supermarkets run out of food, the petrol stations run out of fuel and rubbish piles up in the streets. Graham. Quote
Kevin Wood Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 anyone have an LPG westy? I'm going to convert my tin top pretty soon at this rate. Have done a couple of cars for mates and it's not a huge job. Problem with an LPG Westy is fitting a tank. Then again, a liquid phase injection setup would be fantastic and give more power. No option to switch back to petrol though. Kevin Quote
dombanks Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 the only way a protest will work is if it is does not stop the flow of goods and services and if EVERYONE does it. like martin said if you do stop the flow esp of fuel your a terrorist. just another one of those lovely laws that tiny blur introduced. i recon the best way to protest is not stopthem but to delay them. how annoyed do you get when someone is doing 25mph in a 30 or say 35 in a 40. it needs a group of people not just one or two to do this every day for a month. lets see what happens then. Nic Ayre Posted April 19, 2008 Posted April 19, 2008 Can't wait to see Shell's and BP's profits next year, the cost of extraction and processing has not increased beyond anything like normal, it is just the demand forcing the prices up, which is just pure profit for these companies. Quote
jeff oakley Posted April 19, 2008 Posted April 19, 2008 Fuel will go up and up which is why the big rush for alternative power scources. The majority of oil is in unstable areas and this along with Opec plus the uk taxes is the reason why they were high. As the price of crude is now much higher the effect on the uk is marked. Comparing taxes between contries is meaningless unless you take the whole tax burden. In France for instance they have no road tax, and young familesa re encouraged to have kids and to stay at home with subsidies. Once they are older the tax burden rises markedly. There is an agenda to price the poorer motorist off the road and onto public transport, which is ironic for the scocilaists in power richer people will downsize cars, and superrich will still have supercars. As for protest, as Martin says we as a nation cannot now blockade things, as this falls under terrorism laws nicly. The company I work for has over three hundered vehicles, for every 1p on the fuel cost it is £35000 per annum increase. We budgeted for a 10% increase which when we are now running at 22% above where we set the budgets in November. We have to pass it on as do other companies so the inflation of 2.5% that the goverment quote is b*****ks. Now as for where the money goes, yes there is a large pension entitlment, negotiated over years when it was not an issue, but by far the biggest is the social payments that are made to those who won't work. We are the laughing stock of the world the way we dish out money to those who turn out kids, for a living. we give money to workers here from Poland, who then are entitked to Child benefit when the kids are not even in the country. Form speaking with ordinary folks they see the way MPs treat themselves to our money, the way that money is given to wasteful, but politically correct causes, that benefit so few and yet the ploiticians are so deluded that they think people are happy. what point will it stop me driving I don't know is the simple answer, but it will have an effect on ordinary families in such a huge way we are at the tip of a huge slope. I suspect that Labour secretly want to loose the next election as the country is in such a state that who ever wins will have nothing to work with and will have years of austerity to get us back on an even keel, then labour will promise a change again and we will have boom and busst all over again. pistonbroke Posted April 19, 2008 Posted April 19, 2008 No sympathy for anyone that runs a 4x4 (that includes Steve who started this in his Nissan Navara) I have a 4x4 through need not choice! Staffordshire is very rural and I need the car to access the area we cover. Personally I hate the thing and would much prefer a sporty family motor but that will not do single track farm roads in the middle of winter in 4 inch snow or floods. I lived on a farm until I was 6, my dad never had a problem getting up and down the 1.5 mile lane in his Cortina on a daily basis Likewise , I used to drive a 1ltr Ford Anglia Van through all sorts of weather, had to get to farms and places up and down unmetalled roads with pot holes , snow ,ice , torrential rain ,fog and w.h.y. all par for the course , never stopped me getting the job done I have a big smile to myself everey time I hear the reason why its "vital" to have a 4x4 . complete b*****k its all about mines bigger and better than yours .
