ZX10R engine in Westy

Hi,

Help needed please!  I need to replace the engine on my ZX9R engined Westy (the gearbox has gone bang).  It's a relatively old engine, so I'm not overly keen on spending the best part of a grand rebuilding the gearbox, and fancy a hike in power whilst I'm considering the options.  The favourite choice was a 2007 ZX10R engine (50 extra bhp), but the costs are escalating:

New manifold,

Changing the engine mountings,

Maybe increasing the height of the transmission tunnel due to the increased height of the crankshaft (potentially the biggest job)?

Shortened sump - I imagine I'm going to have to get this made?

Usual stuff - fuel line, wiring etc.

I can get the engine for £1500, but I'm struggling to get the additional bits to add up to less than an additional £1500.  Okay - it's an extra 50bhp on the old ZX9R but at £3K it's beginning to look pricey.

Has anyone done a ZX10R engine into a Westy (megablade chassis), and perhaps have a list of things that I need to factor into the build cost??  Are there things here I haven't factored in?  Do I need to do the transmission tunnel? Anyone know where I can get a shortened sump without having to get one made from scratch?

Help much appreciated!

Dont know about the ZX10 engine im afraid, but try Andy Bates at AB Performance re the sump. If he doesnt do them he will know someone who does.

I looked at swopping to the lates Fireblade engine, which can be had for the £1800 mark, but like you have said its £3000 of a job at least by the time you factor in the extra bits.

Jeff Cooper had a zx12 powered car a few years back.

£3000 for an extra 50bhp sounds ok, plus you will have bits to sell off.

We use the zx 10 engines in a f1 sidecar and swear by them.  Im sure that we have a spare 05 spec engine with hawk spec cams sitting in the workshop if you pm me your number i will pass it on to the guy who s outfit it s.  Im also sure weve got a flat sump that would suit your needs.  Ive made a couple of looms for these so if you need a chuck let me know.

The transmission is built into the engine to it will rise with the engine. So that will be solved when you mount the engine on it's new mounts. Unless I've missed something...

Ah! My new specialist subject.

I now have a 2007 ZX10r in my narrow SEi. I did quite a bit of research on the newer bike engines available and if you ignore the fact that you have to make/source all the bits to make it fit yourself it really does seem to be the best engine available for the money at the moment… but then designing and making bits if 90% of the fun for me, I like a challenge.

I should say I don’t have it running yet, I’m still building my own dry sump system and waiting for the Simpson’s exhaust bulk buy to happen in the new year.

If you have a dry sump the propshaft will fit easily down the tunnel. (mine is just about the middle height wise). I should be doing a batch of 5 dry sump systems for the ZX10r in the not to distant future, if your interested let me know and I will keep you posted.

Go for it, its a great engine.

Can second this Andy is a top guy. I run ZX12R in my Genesis race car the guy knows his stuff

Cheapest solution surely is to find another ZX9R engine since the gearbox is integral with it I reckon you could pick one up for around a grand rather than spend that on a gearbox rebuild alone.... :t-up:
