Advice on fitting oil cooler

QUOTE
The Honda Vtec engines are fitted with a water cooled oil cooler that is sandwiched between the block and the oil filter

Called a Modine Cooler, often seen fitted to Sierra/Escort Cosworths.

How about one of these?

Do these work, i always thought they were for show rather than purpose?

Someone will, im sure, correct me

Not sure about those...... ???

IMO I reckon they could act like insulation and keep the heat in.....rather than help get rid of it.

They help the oil get up to temperature quicker, and help keep the oil temp stable as the YB has quite a small volume of oil and an extra 2 large heat inputs compared to a normal engine - the under piston cooling jets and the turbo.

However, if the rad isn't upto it it will overload the coolant system - hence i'm about to fit an oil - air cooler.

Just wondering if anybody has fitted a oil cooler to there Westfield, with a remote oil filter, temp gauge adaptor and oil thermostat. Have checked out the Burton catalogue for parts, but would be helpfull if anyone has any advice or pic's that would help me decide on the best way forward.

Hi

I know this post is very old but did you get anywhere with this is the end?

Thanks

I'm afraid on a quick scan back through this thread, there is no one there who is still a member and able to post.

No problem, thanks for looking.

About to carry out an oil change I did consider the need to fit one to my Zetec. I don’t do loads of track days but I like to drive it hard and on the euro trips in 35deg heat up and down mountain passes all day long I was conscious of it getting hot. I change the oil every year and run a decent quality oil. Iam not sure really reading the above whether I should worry or not. An oil temp gauge would be a nice addition…

Better to monitor first. I’ve seen no higher than 120 Degrees C oil temp (sump sender) when alp pass blatting. My S2000 just runs the standard Modine oil to water exchanger below the  filter.

If you fit an oil cooler you could make matters worse if it over cools. So for road and track use, make sure you fit one with a thermostat to avoid this issue.

My Zetec (ITB and cams producing 190+bhp) with a 13 row oil cooler with a 92 deg C thermostat spends most of the year with a blanking plate in front of the cooler only getting removed on hot summer track days that could be managed with shorter sessions on track.  The increased oil capacity of a Raceline wet sump, remote oil filter and cooler means that in Autumn/Spring it takes a good 1/2+ hr run to get the oil over low 80s deg C for majority road car, with hindsight I wouldn't bother.

As above you won't need one for any type of road driving 👍

It's only trackdays where you are at WOT for so long the oil temps become a issue.

If you do fit a air to oil cooler you will probably need to blank it off for road driving as the oil won't get hot enough to evaporate any moisture that's in the crank case.

Might be worth looking into a Mocal Laminova, expensive to buy but work well👍

I was getting raising oil temps if driving fast for prolonged periods on the road (like dual carriageways) and on track but it was fine just normal driving around. I think even when driving quite hard on the road there is quite a lot of time off the gas??

I fitted a 10 row oil cooler and a remote filter fitting with a thermostatic take off for the oil cooler. Seems like a good compromise but it was getting a bit hot still at Donington on Sunday. Oil temp was edging past 120 on longer runs and pressure was starting to drop a bit. I’m debating fitting a slightly larger one.

Pics below (which seem to be upside down??!!) if anyone is interested!!

120 is fine👍

What oil do you use?

If it's a thin one that the manufacturer of the engine recommends go up to a thicker grade that will offer better protection hot.

For reference Millers say their performance oils are fine seeing peaks of 150 and constantly running at 130!

This supports the view to change oil after each track day, if you've been 'battering it'!

I’m running Valvoline SynPower 10w40 currently on the recommendation of Raceline.

I’ll look at Millers products for my next oil change.

That was quite cold on Sunday but Donnington really does load temperatures up more than other tracks.. if you were getting hot on Sunday Dan and you had plans to Donnington in the summer then I would consider further oil cooling... You can always blank off..

If not doing Donnington in high temps then probably be ok..

I try and keep my temps around 100-105.. the oil may cope with higher temps but I don't think it does engine any good, plus if I do then happen to be at Donnington on a hot day there is a little up my sleeve.

I use Miller's and it seems ok.. going to take a sample out of engine and send to them to analyse which is worth it for about £40..
