Ian Podmore Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I agree Mike, I have a company car and I pay for private mileage which includes to and from work if I'm in the office. This is the better option for me than the fuel benefit in kind. F For me I consider the tax a fair amount to pay for the benefit that I receive, perhaps that because I chose tax efficient cars each time though. I do hate paying tax still though! Quote
jeff oakley Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 This is the usual response to company cars. If I cannot have one why should anyone else. I have no problem being charged for the private use of my car if it was a reasonable charge, however I object to having to pay to do the job. There is a world of differance between someone who has to visit customers, or go to a place to do a job, like a plumber or alarm engineer, as part of their job and someone who has to to have their own car to get to work. The old system gave a tax break to genuine people who needed a car to get to do the job. But as it was mileage based the tax office decided to help reduce congestion by taking away that allowance. Vans have always been subjected to tax for personel use, what has changed is the tax man has decided £3k is a good figure to use as taxable benift to start at, how they arrived at that figure no one knows. I am with Spence, they punish hard work and enterprise to pay for those who will not, it really is that simple. Eh? No-one said anything about company cars - that is something totally different. We are talking about use of company vans to effectively get to and from work for nothing and like I said being self employed and based at home should be treated differently. Company cars ARE a benefit and should be taxed as such so just deal with it! Mike Apologies Mike if I misunderstood. I have a car which I pay tax on and in my case if the company allowed me I would rather buy my own as what I pay in tax would buy a very nice car, but with 60k business miles each year it is finacially a none starter for the company. My view is the goverment saw a chance to get an extra bit from Van drivers whilst happily allowing tax loop holes to exsist that cost billions. Van drivers tend to be in the lower income brackets so they are easy to target for a bit extra as they are a captive bunch. I still feel the incentives are being erroded for people to work hard in this country by taxing every item they can to pay for those who won't. Quote
Lurksalot Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 While I would use any options legaly available to mitigate the amount of tax I pay. I can't help but think its not unreasonable to pay tax on any benefit in kind. Otherwise whats next company big screen TV's and company golf clubs ? I can't help thinking that in the security business alarms and cameras , Spence has a legitimate claim to be able to demonstrate the best kit on the market, and if that means his company has to invest in HD equipment like viewing screens and HD recorders then they are all tax deductable , It might be a bit more awkward to justify the golf clubs, but then they might just get lost in the expenses on the weekend trip to the security exhibition on the Algarve, which I'm sure the company executives should be attending Quote
