Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 Something else occurred to me Kerry. I had a total loss on a Westfield in 2003 - not me driving, but a named driver on my policy - and the insurers paid up the purchase price with no problem at all. The cover continued for the remainder of the policy duration with no cost to me bar the excess. But, very big but; come renewal time they ran for cover and declined to renew my policy at any price. I had to hunt around for a new policy with another insurer and the premium more than doubled. Quote
KerryS Posted February 28, 2007 Author Posted February 28, 2007 The thought had occured to me, Clive Quote
Major Stare Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 Kerry, Rob Navin uses someone in Chesterfield, they did Tommo's old car and it looked very good Quote
timd Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 The thought had occured to me, Clive Just DIY. It'll cost at most £30 in materials, and a bunch of elbow grease. If you can build a kit car you can fix GRP, its not difficult. Failing that I'd be surprised if it cost much more than your excess and inevitable premium increase to pay someone else to do it. I'd certainly not get insurance involved over a few gel cracks... Quote
brianm Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I'd 2nd most of the advice given here so far re repair rather than replace, but regarding ins premiums etc, the damage is already done. The insurers are aware of the incident already, and will load/treat your renewal in their normal way whether you claim or not Sorry, Quote
KerryS Posted April 24, 2007 Author Posted April 24, 2007 Update - had a cash offer from FJ that implies they keep the car for about a tenth of what it's worth. Can't be right, hope it's my interpretation of a standard letter format. My plan was to repair myself with a new tub. Quote
Major Stare Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 That cant be right Kerry You may as well get it repaired yourself Quote
MAT1800 Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Hi Kerry Just read through.... At least you only hit a freezer Kerry I have so far managed to reverse into my house, straight after SVA and my tintop a few weeks later Nothing major just a few scratches.. I second your opinion of the tub fitting being the not so exciting part of the build , I'm sure it would be easier the second time around... but not exactly fun! That letter from the insurance company doesn't seem to make much sense from what you have said ? ? Let us know what happens. Quote
KerryS Posted April 26, 2007 Author Posted April 26, 2007 Right! Clarified this with FJ, they are offering me a cash settlement for me to undertake the repair myself and I retain full title to the car's ownership. So I need to order a body-tub from the factory for autumn collection Thanks for everyones interest/support/pi** taking. Quote
MAT1800 Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Sooooo...... Are you going for the new shape ? ? Quote
KerryS Posted August 16, 2007 Author Posted August 16, 2007 Just to update this old thread, insurance renewal has come through today from FJ with a 89% increase. Not unexpected!! Quote
pistonbroke Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 Change your insurer And while your about it stick a block of wood on the garage floor where your front wheels go , to stop you doing the same again Quote
KerryS Posted August 16, 2007 Author Posted August 16, 2007 I did wonder about that but from experience with other non-car insurance, once they know you have had a claim premium goes up. Anyway, car now lives on a trailer in teh garage and teh tintop is outside, after all if a Swedish Volvo can't survive Brit weather, there's no hope............ Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Sorry to hear about the rise, Kerry. But as you said, not a real surprise. Quote
