KerryS Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 As some of you know, like a nunney, I forgot to take the car out of gear when I released the clutch and reversed into the freezer in the garage I know it was stupid and I feel a total wally. I smashed the fog light (easily replaced) and damaged the gel coat. I looked into repairs to the body myself but then I noticed several hairline cracks in the gel coat radiating some 30 cm from the point of impact so took it back to Westfield today who said that whatever repair was done would not look good and the cracks will continue to grow. So... ....new tub!!!!!!!!!! Cannot believe something so stupid could lead to such a far reaching repair. Have contacted insurers now Quote
Martin Keene Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 It sounds stupid, but Westfield have learnt from experince that repairing tubs is a total waste of time... Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 bl**** Hell Kerry! I am really sorry to hear about that. A moment's inattention can cost you as I know myself. Years ago (in the 70s) I reversed my Midget into my garage and only then realised I'd left the driver's door open. Wrenched the hinges and creased the front wing badly. Luckily it was the wing I'd dropped the bonnet onto when undoing the hinges to haul the engine out. Actually the car was on a high mileage by then and not worth to repair so I 'fixed it'. Didn't look too bad though. Quote
KerryS Posted February 26, 2007 Author Posted February 26, 2007 Thanks both. Just think Clive, if you did that now you could turn it into an Eleven! K Quote
Andrew Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 A few years back I had a Porsche 924, and a sloping drive to my garage. Stepped out of the car one day, and caught my heel on the handbrake button. (On the door side of the driver's seat) Handbrake released and the car ran down the slope through the closed garage door! Yours truly hanging on desperately to the car door trying (and failing) to slow the progress! Quote
Mark Stanton Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 on the bright side (if there is one) you might be able to re-coup some money by selling the bodywork onto one of the race guys or SS drivers - where a few minor bodycracks aren't important Quote

Major Stare Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 Kin'ell mate, a new tub !!! As already said, the rest of the tub is imaculate, so sell it here or fleabay to pay for your excess and some upgrades Quote
KerryS Posted February 26, 2007 Author Posted February 26, 2007 Without any better knowledge, I can only take advice from WF and Martin K sort of endorses what I was told. Though I was feeling a bit fed up last week and thoughts of selling it were in my mind, I guess with the effort that went into building it, I couldn't really do it. So a major transplant to keep it pristine it probably what I need to do. Insurers want to inspect before authorising any repair as it's so costly. I won't publically say what I was quoted as that is private info. Retaining tub after repairis a good idea, thanks. It's a navy blue one for those interested. Quote
Major Stare Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 When you get it fixed..............move your freezer !!! Quote

Scottish Bloke Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 Agree with Swiss, repair it "properly" should be no further issues. It will need to be painted tho. Rich Quote
