Stupid fixation with BHP

the correct amount of power allows you to spin the wheels at any speed in any gear (assuming the car is geared to say 150mph).  this then passes control to the driver.  anything less is not enough.

I agree, why should the engine be the limiting factor? Whether it's suspension, brakes, engine or aerodynamics, at some point one will reach it's limit before any of the others. Whichever one that is will just force the driver to drive around the problem.

forced induction is the only sensible thing to do.  Torque, power and driveabilty is just a supercharger or turbo away

Mine is  ;)

I still want that 3,000,000bhp motor

Trouble is, it's usually the driver ???  ???  ???

I've been traveling and away for a month or so now, and I come back to the boardroom to see that newbies and those giving the advice are hung up on bhp and potential mythical bhp figures from engines.

Why does everyone fixate on BHP so much.........It is irelevent without a good gearbox, Diff, Brakes, shocks, even chassis to put it all in,and the drivers skill to drive it.

I say to all you interested in purchasing a westfield; Ignore all the comments about purchasing a "so and so" engined car as it has or can give 3million bhp and start thinking about the car as a whole.

You wouldn't choose between a Golf or Focus because of bhp, but because of all the other bits that make it go, stop, steer and an ownership pleasure. Why treat a Westfield any different?

I'm sorry, but this is getting stupid. Anyone would think that without 200bhp you would be lucky to get off the drive let alone reach 60mph on the road.

Westfields are fun and fast for more reasons than just bhp, high time we started telling newbies that.

My god... You are REALLY going to hate me!

I'm a total newbie to Westfields...  only had mine a few months.

Car was owned my mrjonnie off here I believe.

Was apparently 270bhp....

I only drove it a few times and did 1 trackday before I decided it was completely gay and needed ALOT more power...

Its now with Polly X and next time I drive it (hopefully next few weeks!!!) it will be just under 400bhp...

I'm thinking about buying a Nitrous kit as well... as even without driving the car... as I think its still going to be a bit slow above 120mph

The trouble is what all the standard production cars can achieve these days.

I was having trouble keeping up with a flippin' Skoda Something 2.5TDi recently (all at legal road speeds). Admitedely it changed on the twisty bits, but he was altogether too close for my liking.

Started buying VX conversion bits promptly afterwards.

Been keeping abreast of your build on PF mate - a very nice motor indeed and is in good hands with Stu and Chip.

My own has been on the road for a little over a month with just 170Bhp and I've already swapped my 400+bhp engine in. Hopefully have it running this weekend... then it's only a matter of time before the chipster finds a place to mount his can of laughing gas! LOL

All this talk of too much power just makes me want to cry!

I seriously would love to be given the chance in one of those 400bhp cars, just to see what the difference is...

My measly Busa has not been challenged yet on the (unfortunately) few trackdays this year. Cadwell this weekend should be good. The usual suspects converge at the circuit and we 'll have the opportunity to see what different cars can do...

In the other club forum I frequent, we give newbies the follwing advice:

1)Driver training

2)Safety

3)Suspension

4)Brakes

If you still want to go faster,

5)Engine

Trouble is most of the newbies learn to follow this the hard way... :-(

I must say that the only reason, really, that I bought a Westfield was to have a very high (relatively) power to weight ratio without it costing a fortune. I guess I could go further and say that's why I bought a Westfield rather than , lets say another "Seven type" car.

I've got about 190bhp (at the flywheel) (genuine, confirmed on a rolling road) which is certainly "enough" for use on the public highway. However, I wouldn't say NO to a bit more power, particularly for hillclimbs. Further improvements to handling and road holding will be first priority, but followed, probably quite closely, by another 30 or 35 bhp. Why not, if the engine can do it without it spoiling the characteristics of the engine in terms of flexibility which is not so difficult with throttle bodies?

I agree that you don't need more than, say, 125 bhp in something like a Westfield to have a very brisk car at legal road speeds, and to have a lot of fun. But if you want it and can afford it whats wrong with another 100bhp on top? It just makes it even more brisk, and with care even more fun!! :p  :p  :p

as all westfield owners are law abiding citizens 60bhp should be enough to reach legal limit :D
