Karl Woolf Posted October 29, 2006 Author Posted October 29, 2006 Guys, just don't speed! Its a risk thing You speed , you take a risk of a fine and points just accept the penalty or slow down Highwayman, I gather your a highway design engineer from previous posts. Is it really in your opinion that todays speed limits incorporate factors from modern vehicle design and todays advances in road surfacing materials to still apply to a speed limit plucked as a figure from the sky some 30 odd years ago ? I think the thing is this, a large majority of people on the motorway cruise at approx 80-85mph. There are some sections of motorway where cars seem to average more like 95mph. The way I see it I would like to think I give consideration to alot of factors when driving on the road, conditions etc as stated before. I have had one RTA in 20yrs and generally believe the biggest problem with drivers is a lack observation skills. This is something that used to be considered in the "old" system of speed enforcement, however today it is now based on a camera, and a strict limit of enforcement. But really is the motivation the reduction in Road accident injuries or a cash cow. If it was the prior I suspect a lot more would be done to aim at driver education with this revenue, of which safe braking distances and increasing observation skills would be a major training factor. scott beeland Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 I'm just about to send off my £60 payment and license for addition of my 3 point prize for getting scamera'd at 41 mph heading towards Blackpool private hospital. Tried every avenue I could to get the points dropped...But it just aint happening Don't mind paying the £60 (i was 11mph over the posted limit after all)...but it's the insurance loading from the points that hurts...for the next 4 years that really pisses me off. Yes...I know i've been bad and surely the £60 is enough to make me feel bad....But who's interest does it serve (apart from my insurers) in stinging me with 3 points? Drives me fookin insane. I'd get less hit for breaking into someones house/car Quote
Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 I'm with you on this one Karl, I've seen that van many times and it got me once on the A66 for 71 in a 60. All cars should be fitted with Camera seeking missiles....see a camvan, press a button, zap Quote
highwayman Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 I don't make the speed limit rules unfortunately. I have had a nice clean licence since 1991 and still do over £25k a year. I have had to accept that we have safety cameras and mobile sites too. I drive the motorway everyday and cruise on my way to work and home allowing enough time and I do my job a lot less stressed than if I drove aggressively or at higher speeds worried if I was likely of getting caught My attitude is to just allow more time. I have sat nav and plan longer journeys by seeing how long its going to take beforehand. You're right about driver awareness, the income from fines should go to driver refresher tests. I think we have too many people here on international licences. Did you see the Real story on truck drivers the other night? Many are doing excessive hours because they are being blackmailed by their bosses to deliver or get sacked. Another problem is when lorries overtake each other and the speed differential between them and cars and reducing the passing ability down to just lane 3 Slightly off topic but the company I work for had 5 roadworkers killed last year by drivers ploughing through the cones. These guys take risks everyday and I have to design the risks out with safe traffic management. The industry seems to be going nocturnal and that has added risks just to avoid congestion, gaurantee journey times and driver frustration. Quote
Buzz Billsberry Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Listen you can all bang on about road surfaces, conditions, it was the middle of the night, the road was clear, I didn't see the camera, I didn't slow down in time, my wife is pregnant, the dogs sick, my kids are ill, I need to get them to hospital, my toast was burning, etc, etc, etc yardy, yardy, yah It’s a game out there you got caught just think of how many times you've got away with it? we all generally drive sensibly but we all have our moments. U was caught speeding that means you broke the law. Laws are put there for whatever reason and generally you can't beat the system, so pay your fine take it on the chin and stop whinging. Buzz Quote
Buzz Billsberry Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Sorry Reece went off on one a bit there!! it just does me head in sometimes Buzz Quote
kik1.6se Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Guys, just don't speed! Its a risk thing You speed , you take a risk of a fine and points just accept the penalty or slow down The only time I've ever been over the speed limit was driving to St Bee's on the Friday before C2C 2005. I was over taking a van on a duel carriage way and sped up abit to get out of his blind spot. I was apparently doing 78mph and got 3 points. You could argue that it would have been more dangous staying in his blind spot, but as been stated though I was braking the law and therefore just paid the fine. Kirk Quote

Kirk Perfect example of how unfare the scamera law is Would a copper have nicked you for this , or a jury in court , I doubt it There isn't a box you can tick for "mitigating circumstances" on a photograph Quote
satman Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Hi Guys, Micky the newbie to the forum here. Interesting post on the speeding thing but just remember a couple of points before you go handing over a signed piece of paper saying youre guilty. As with any case, the prosecution have to prove their case. It's easy to be intimidated by a form too which says if you dont say who the driver is we will prosecute you for that too. Remember that you are being pushed into a corner to return one of the applicable sections completed and if you can show the ticket office that putting pressure on you to make a statement by the threat of a secondary prosecution you may have a case to challenge them in court where you will say that you were intimidated into completing their form by the nature of the wording. The issue here is that any statement made has to be made of your own free will. Your statement is the basis of their successful prosecution. A statement made under duress cannot be used in court. You can always complete the form and return it unsigned, you have then complied with the request for information but it does not constitute a statement and carries very little weight. satman. Quote
Buzz Billsberry Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Yeah right then you go to court they produce your forward facing picky or a picky of your car from the rear and YOU know it’s you, so who ya gonna blame? All they'll do is throw the book at you with a hefty fine for wasting their time. All I'm saying is if its and 99.9% of the time it is you speeding just pay it. If the speed limit was X and your speed was Y over it then you have broken the law… see where we are going with this >>> Yep I hate the foooking things but they are a part of life yep we'd all prefer to be stopped by a copper and ‘blag’ our way out as I have on 2 occasions this year. But while they are bringing in the dosh they'll keep them. They, according to govt figs net a hugh amount in fines last year and they've now admitted that the figures regarding speed related deaths on UK roads weren’t as they suggested as 1in3 but actually 1 in 20 deaths due to excessive speed So for the sake of been a smart A*** and you know it was you, pay it; because there's a very small chance the oppressed of this world i.e. you and me will not get off with it so you are just making a hugh rod for your wallet and the points on your licence Buzz Quote
whitlock Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Qu how many more people have been prosecuted since the introduction of speed cameras, who is making real money out there Have to admit then when renewing my insurance the company said they'd not increase the premium as '2/3 of drivers have 3 points' Quote
Buzz Billsberry Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 I know its crazy I have six points which I've had for about 3 years now and it ain't affected my insurance Buzz Quote
