JohnCh Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Geoff, it sounds like you are located in Canada. If so, anywhere near Vancouver? I live near Seattle, and am happy to take you out in my Westfield if you want to make the trip down. BTW I've had several conversations with the new Westfield distributor in the States (who I believe also serves Canada) and he seems very committed to improving Westfield's position in North America. You should contact him if you haven't already done so. -John Quote

Owen9364 Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 i drove it a few times .. proberbly back in around 97/98 ? The reason I ask is I used to do a lot of work on it . It was very fragile back then . Although I did'nt do the original conversion ,I spent a lot of time getting it reliable inc a complete engine rebuild in 2001 . After about 18 mths total reliability he moved onto a 355 , got to drive both on several occasions around oulton Quote
Keith@FM Posted October 28, 2006 Posted October 28, 2006 BTW I've had several conversations with the new Westfield distributor in the States (who I believe also serves Canada) and he seems very committed to improving Westfield's position in North America. You should contact him if you haven't already done so. I'll second that suggestion. Canada is very anti-kit in a lot of ways. Manik (that new Westie distributor) is working on bringing them into Canada. Without his help you're pretty much out of luck. So I'd recommend calling him to see how he's doing. One other option is a used car. You can import a kit car into Canada if it's 15 years old. Spend some time cruising through the classifieds (I like the ones on Pistonheads) and you'll find a fair number that are 1991 or older...or titled as such anyhow. It's a fairly simple matter to bring one of these into Canada. Something else to consider in North America is parts availability. I think the new Miata-based Westfield SDV has any of the other offerings beat in this regard, and it also happens to be really affordable. But I'm biased as you'll see. I can't comment on Westie vs Caterham, but I know my own car is very dependent on setup. Keith (disclaimer - I work for Flyin' Miata, the US dealer for the Miata-based SDV. Once Manik figures how to bring them into Canada, we'll be selling them there as well alongside Manik) Quote

I have gained some valuable insight on this forum on the nature of both vehicles since my original post from the comments made by various posters. I have been contacted by Tom McClintock, the US Westfield NA dealer. He has been extremely helpful and we have exchanged multipe emails. We are currently working to get the right level of kit completeness that is accepted for import by Transport Canada. I believe Canadian rules allow the import of the British Westfield kit motors as well as the zetec and duratec that are allowed into the US. And perhaps direct shipment to the customer in Canada to avoid delays of delivery into the US and reimportation. Thanks to all, Geoff Quote
JonnyBoy Posted October 29, 2006 Posted October 29, 2006 Geoff.. one thing you should know before you start is that you cannot import a kit car or components of a kit car sufficient to build a kit car into Canada! Any imported kit car must be 15 years old! The only kit car you could import is one which isn't a kit! Presumably a factory built car doesn't fall withing this catagory?? Quote
JonnyBoy Posted October 29, 2006 Posted October 29, 2006 Oh yes, if this is wrong.. please also pm me as I'd given up on importing my car due to my understanding of these constraints! My poor little car is sat im my garage in the UK whilst I'm sat here at my desk in Whistler (first snow is falling outside) and I'm missing my car! So, I want it here Quote
