peterg Posted October 25, 2006 Author Posted October 25, 2006 To all those people who suggested ringing BMW, I have made a fuss, Steve Rowley whose garage my car is at has talked to the Service Manager at the local BMW dealer who said I would get no help but despite this I rang BMW Customer Services and related the whole sorry tale to them....their response was:- "if this problem had been a design/manufacturing fault then 'Technical' would have flagged this as a recall which they haven't and due to the significant mileage of your car (83k ), the fact that "you're not one of our customers" (ie I didn't buy it from a BMW dealer ), and the fact that you don't have either a FBMWSH or an Extended Warranty means we would not entertain helping in this case
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Ive sold dozens of 330d"s some with *very * big miles and am yet to have one with a problem other than aimass meter Just to hijack this a little JeffC, what's your experience of common rail TDCi Mondeos and the same Duratorq engine in the non-common rail TDDi versions (pre mid 02)? Your wide exposure to the vagaries of the various marques is valuable.
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Thanks Jeff. I'm glad I have the TDDi version then because if your findings and the experiences of the owners on the Mondeo Enthusiasts' forum are anything to go by, that is a safer choice.
rm163603 Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 To all those people who suggested ringing BMW, I have made a fuss, Steve Rowley whose garage my car is at has talked to the Service Manager at the local BMW dealer who said I would get no help but despite this I rang BMW Customer Services and related the whole sorry tale to them....their response was:- "if this problem had been a design/manufacturing fault then 'Technical' would have flagged this as a recall which they haven't and due to the significant mileage of your car (83k ), the fact that "you're not one of our customers" (ie I didn't buy it from a BMW dealer ), and the fact that you don't have either a FBMWSH or an Extended Warranty means we would not entertain helping in this case I'm not surprised by that response but it's really a cop out. How can that component be affected in any way by any of the points they make? It's not reasonable to expect an 85K mile engine to be destroyed in this way. In all situatations like this that I've heard of regarding BMW's it's been an uphill slog to get them to admit to anything. The one I know most about is the subframe issue. In some earlier non M3 E46's the rear subframe mounts actually tear out of the chassis as where it bolts to eventually fatigues and cracks. BMW denied this was an issue until the number of cases in the US meant it became futile. It's one of the great things about the internet, before that there was no way for people to compare notes on things like this.
Karl Woolf Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Little off thread but have got an A4 1.9tdi 130 sport 02 with 98k on the clock. Service is due and just contacted the main dealer to find out cost, last service was major at £350, this one is a minor £304 !!. I was starting to ponder using a local speacialist (it has FASH) but this has got me thinking if anything big goes bang "might" still get abit of mileage with Audi. Thoughts, anything that is known to pop on this engine

He has had two engines go pop, each time it has been a cambelt breakage. Because he has got the FASH the motors have been replaced under warranty and his mileage is up around yours... The other thing is finding a specialist you can trust. There are so many people now who claim to be specialsists when they know less than you do. Personally unless you have a rock solid specialist I would DIY if you want to save money and keep all the receipts for the parts you have used. At least then you will know it has been done properly.
Liam Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Ive just bought a 130,000 mile A6 130 tdi avant for myself to do the miles in up and down the mortorway , it still drives like brand new, flicked through the service print and has no probs since new only expenses are services and tyres Ditto. I had an A6 for 120K and the only thing that failed was a anti lock wheel sensor. Drove like new when it went. It just goes to show it's a bit of a lottery, which it shouldn't be these days, and I am now distinctly nervous about my 320d. However, a very nice lady phones me after a service to tick all her boxes(!) so that's all right then.
JeffC Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 anything over 60k or 3 years and audi wont give any good will .. I never use main dealers unless I have to , (£90 per hour !!! ) even under 3 years 60k for warranty purposes you *dont * have to use a main dealer as long as the garage is vat registered (whatever thats about ? ) and you used recognised parts oils etc. they have to honour the MFW. Audi tdis are my main seller and I will have sold hundreds of 130 tdis.. only major issue Ive had is dual mass flywheel knocking comes in at under £250 fitted. never replaced an airmass meter on an Audi 130tdi , which is strange as the passats do fail and its the same part ! ? Ive heard of turbos going and injectors failing (lumpy on idle is the first sign ) again never had it.. Audi now recomend 85k for the 130 tdi timing belt it was 60k but is the same belt with timing belts Im a firm believer its cheaper to replace rubber than metal.. my last A6 (1998) 110 tdi I bought in 2001 at 113k, sold it to a pal, he kept it till 180k, I bought it back run it to 210k and sold it to a guy im in contact with and in that time its had 3 timing belts and servicing, original clutch turbo , wheelbearings etc, and still runs like new and I would have bought it back again as a user but the guy wanted more for it than I sold him it for last year
Jenko Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 My A4 TDI now has 185000 miles on it...I got audi to service it to 100k miles but they Pi$$ed me off so much I decided to do it my self.........the only thing to ever go wrong was a MAS...and is a 37 quid job...........Aprt from thatit's never missed a beat, does 50mpg (55 if you're careful)..........
peterg Posted October 25, 2006 Author Posted October 25, 2006 OK chaps, I'm closing the thread now as it's drifting a bit but mostly because it's depressing me seeing it keep popping up to the top again
