Bit of a worry for the Kit Car Community

RH Thread

Reading this thread, seems a worrying issue for Robin Hood and failing a SVA on chassis build.

Hope the guy who was caught on this gets it sorted, he has done a nice job with the car, must be gutted to fail, and then damn worried to fail on an unsafe chassis.

I would have thought that it wasn't a worry for the kit car industry unless you make an unsound chassis which has got to be good news for the consumer... assuming the analysis of how sound it was was accurate.

Agree with you there.

Must be gutting to fail SVA on the chassis, when you build it to the exact manuals and supplied DVD's.

Bad enough a exposed radius, but chassis must leave you where to go from there....

If you've seen the light weight RH chassis it's clear where the SVA inspector is coming from, doesn't look safe.

Following those threads I must say I feel sorry for the guy. Looking at the lightweight though, I know I wouldn't buy one.

The implications for the kit car industry are that if VOSA get the hump over this particular seven inspired design, then they could start looking in more detail at other makers if they believe there could be a wider problem.  :(

Couldn't agree more. However, you'd imagine that being unable to get the car through SVA because of the design rather than because of some build detail would be an open and shut case of not being fit for use so assuming RH don't simply fold he should be ok I would (time spent not withstanding).

As for thinking it's a wider problem... I don't think so. Their design is unique and the implications for the RH car design should have no bearing on other 7s that are not monocoques. Having said that, if my locost gets picked up on a chassis design detail I'd rather know about it at SVA than tanking down towards turn 1 on a track day no matter how inconvenient it may be to sort out.

Agreed, we would all kick ourselves if it was something we had done when building a kit that had led to an SVA failure but we would put it down to experience and would return another day. However,  if it was a more fundamental design issue as the various threads seem to allege, then I don't think I would be happy at all as the problem becomes open ended......

Perhaps the problem is not the car but the fact it was sva'd in Southampton  :bangshead:

You should see the chassis Barry. It is very scary. Rivetted on upper shock mountings made from folded 1mm ali sheet?

I think Southampton are better these days. Felters has just been through there for example with his 11.

I feel really sorry for the chap. I dare say RH will give him his money back... but that might be just the money for the bare kit and wont reflect the other donor components and the time/effort put into it.

It's a bl**** deathtrap. Deserves to fail. Have you seen the seatbelt mounting?

The only question is whether RH will accept liability and reimburse the chap for an item most definitely not fit for purpose.

There's no comparing it with any other Se7en car on the market so you've nothing to worry about with your Westies.

Sounds very dodgy anybody got a picture

Having read the thread on the RH club site I don't much like the look of the mountings but what it would appear to come down to it that if RH can supply proof that the mountings and chassis are up to the job then the test center will pass the car.

Jesus... If the pictures of the transmission tunnel / seat belts mounts are re-presentative of the rest of the chassis then it is made simply from bits of 1mm ally folded and riveted in place...

:0

If that is the case then I can't see how one *ever* passed an SVA test...

Double Jesus... I've just looked at his build site and apparently it is made bits of 1mm folded ally, but you have to rivet it together yourself...
