BillyWhizzz2002 Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Hi folks, I have a 1994 SEiW with a limited slip diff. Just wanted to know if it is special oil that is used in it? if so where can i get some? My diff has a westfield alloy casing on back of it with a level plug in the middle. I say this as i duno if there are lots of different ones in use. cheers. Quote
Mark Stanton Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Do you know what type of LSD Sierra viscous Plate type or a Quaife ATB Quote
Blatman Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 For a viscous type or an ATB, no special oil is required. Use EP75/90, EP80 or EP90 to GL5 spec (NOT GL4). Viscosity won't really matter that much... For a plate type LSD, you will need special LSD oil. Quote
Chasmon Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 OK I've been trying to find this out and done a search. I have a 7.5" Diff from a Granada and its a LSD. What type is this? Plate/Viscous? Hope the answer helps Billy too..! Cheers C Quote
Blatman Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Viscous. Plate type LSD's are almost *never* fitted to production cars. Viscous is by far the most common *standard* LSD type. Quote
blankczechbook Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 who makes a viscous that will drop into the westfield housing?? i was under the impression it was different casing - and not able to be used in the westie casing ?? 1989 sei westie housing for diff is wot i got :-) Quote
BillyWhizzz2002 Posted August 11, 2006 Author Posted August 11, 2006 Sorry guys i duno what type of LSD it is. I have been trying to find out from first owner/builder but had no luck. Thats why i said all i know is it has a westy casing on back of it. Is there any visable way of finding out? ie; measuring it in some way or what it looks like at a perticular point? any help welcome...cheers. Quote
BillyWhizzz2002 Posted August 11, 2006 Author Posted August 11, 2006 Fergot to say, engine is a highly tuned pinto with T5 gearbox. duno if that narrows down what can be fitted to my diff. Quote
cast iron Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I thought the Westfield castings were designed to take the Escort Rally Atlas axle plate diff??? Hence very likely to need ATF or another specialist product Big question, Are you sure it is an LSD? Also AP Suretrac diffs use normal Hypoid 80 Quote
BillyWhizzz2002 Posted August 11, 2006 Author Posted August 11, 2006 Not been in touch with first owner/builder yet to confirm what is fitted. But on spec sheet of car when i got it it is listed as having a LSD. I have also jacked up rear of car to turn one of rear wheels and the other wheel goes same way. Quote
Blatman Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 The Westfield ally casings are designed to carry the English diff from the Mk1 or Mk2 Escorts. Atlas diffs don't fit. The Westfield ally cased Escort diffs are fitted to nearly all narrow SEi's, and some early wide SEi's. There is no foolproof way to tell from the outside whether you have an ATB or a plate type LSD in there. The Escort diff will *never* be viscous. The viscous diffs are fitted in the diffs that get removed from Sierras. The only cars that have the 7" viscous diffs as standard are the XR4x4's and *maybe* the XR4i. Cosworth (and Granada Cosworth Scorpio) diffs are 7.5" items and are also viscous, but won't fit in any Westfield chassis unless it's quite a new one or you modify the chassis or chop lumps off the diff casing. Mark Stanton Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 You can fit either an ATB or a plate type diff into the Westfield diff casing Quote
