Chris R
Standard narrow westi, standard 1993 fuel tank without the vent. Fuel filler relocated vertically and fuel cap now located in the cover between the RAC roll bar and boot box lid. New fuel cap is an aero syle one from Merlin Motor sport and is described as locking (although it does not have a key), the cap locates in the filler hole and the flip up tab rotates about a quarter turn to lock the top in the filler housing. Problem, the cap does not seem to have a vent hole, so after driving for say 20 minutes a vacuum is created in the tank, sufficient to prevent me removing the filler cap. I have to leave it for a few minutes and then remove the cap for fueling. Question, is it acceptable to add a small hole in the rubber fuel filler hose and "glue" (suitable adhesive) a small bore fuel hose with a non return valve ? Or can some one recommend a suitable aero type cap which has a vent hole ? Many thanks Chris
Kevin Wood
People have added injection return unions in this manner. Failing that, drill a hole through the top of the tank near the fuel gauge sender so you can access the inside of the tank and fit a valve there. You'll need a valve that allows air to escape as well as enter without allowing fuel leakage. Otherwise, you'll get a different problem when the fuel expands in hot weather and forces itself past the float valves in the carbs. DT sell suitable valves. The factory might be a good source too. John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison
A small plastic non return valve from a diesel car will also suffice. I use one from a Rover which seems to be the same one that Caterhams use. Only cost a couple of quid but next to nowt from a breakers John
