i have a 92 kit (solid rear arches) its got the old type window pillors with escort mirrors i think, i got hold of a set of the newer type pillors and tried to fit them today.

they fit to the body ok but wont fit around the window wiper fillet piece.

do i need a new fillet piece to match the pillors?

I seem to recall that the older style had a moulded in 'step' at the outer edges whereas the more modern ones ( from at least 1999 onwards ) do not have this step. If your original does have a step then I guess you will need a replacement which will need to be pared down to fit.

yes mine has a step in it. i might just try and cut the originall one down and make it fit

Wacomuk,

I went the same route as you on my last car (91 SE) and like you, I had problems with the screen fillet.

Simly trimmed it down and hooked under the pillar. Be careful not to take too much off so do it a step at a time.

I now have a new kit and the fillet on my old car fitted better than this one - there's progress for you!

I have also bought new pillars (wish I knew you wanted some I'd have flogged you mine!). The problems start with the curve at the bottom end being different from the old ones and necessitating new mounting holes in the scuttle. Did you have to drill new holes in your scuttle, wacomuk?

You are lucky, mine will have to be re-drilled. I suppose it depends on exactly where the builder of the car put the pillars in the first place. Thanks for your help.

When I did this a while back I re-shaped the pillars to fit the curve of the body and used the original holes. Had to fettle the screen fillet as well.

I wondered about doing that. I haven't done more than remove the old ones briefly and look at the problem. It seems there's a chance they might fit if I move the location on the scuttle a bit. My intention is to fit the screen to the new pillars and offer it up to the scuttle and see if it will be a practicality to mount the assembly as-is, so to speak. The other problem is that the hinge locations are different and will necessitate changing the hinge positions on the side screens and wind deflectors.  :(

I did a complete screen/pillars/roof/sidescreen swap at the same time so the only real starting point was the holes in the scuttle and a length of stick I originally used to locate the screen with all those years ago when I first built it!

I'd only really wanted to replace the roof & screens (as they were getting a bit tired, and having just had the car sprayed on the insurance we wanted to 'freshen' it all up) but ended up doing the lot. The new mirrors are much better though, so it was worth it. Expensive though.
